Gregory II was a leader of the church in Rome.
He worked hard to help his city. He began fixing the old walls of Rome. In 716, the Tiber River flooded the city. This caused a lot of damage. Gregory led special prayers to stop the floods.
Gregory also helped spread his faith. He sent a man named Boniface to preach in Germany. He also helped leaders in Bavaria and Britain. He turned his own family home into a monastery. This was called St. Agatha in Suburra.
Gregory had to deal with many leaders. He made deals with the Lombard king, Liutprand. These deals helped keep some peace. He also disagreed with Emperor Leo III. The Emperor wanted more tax money from Rome. Gregory said no. The Emperor also made rules about icons, which are sacred images. Gregory rejected these rules. This led to many big changes in how the church was run.
Gregory II was a very important leader of the church in Rome. He was born into a noble family in the year 669.
Gregory spent much of his time helping the city of Rome. He started a big job to fix the old Aurelian Walls. This work began at the Porta Tiburtina. In October 716, the Tiber River burst its banks and flooded the city. The water stayed for eight days and caused much damage. It spread over the Campus Martius and reached the foot of the Capitoline Hill. To help, Gregory ordered many special prayers called litanies to stop the floods. He also worked to build and fix many monasteries. He turned his own family home into a monastery named St. Agatha in Suburra.
He was also very busy helping to spread his faith to new places. In 716, he met with Duke Theodo of Bavaria to talk about Christianity. He sent helpers to Bavaria to set up a local church. In 718, a man named Winfrid asked to preach in Germany. Gregory agreed and gave him the name Boniface. In 722, Gregory met Boniface in person to check his work. Even though Boniface found Gregory's Latin hard to understand, Gregory was happy with him. He made Boniface a bishop in November 722 so he could keep working in Germany.
Gregory had to be a clever leader when dealing with powerful kings. He tried to stay friendly with the Lombard king, Liutprand. In 729, they met at the ancient city of Sutri. They made a deal called the Donation of Sutri. This gave the papacy the town of Sutri and some hill towns in Latium. This was the first time the papacy gained land outside of Rome. However, things were not always peaceful with the Lombards. A duke named Romuald II even captured the town of Cumae in 717. Gregory had to help the Duke of Naples retake that land.
Sometimes, Gregory had to stand up to the most powerful leaders. Emperor Leo III of the Byzantine Empire wanted more tax money from Rome. Gregory refused to pay because he needed the money to buy food for the people. The Emperor also made a rule called iconoclasm. This rule said people could not have icons, which are sacred images. Gregory rejected this rule immediately. This caused many people in places like Ravenna to revolt against the Emperor. His choices helped change how much power the popes would have in the future. He died on 11 February 731.
Pope Gregory II was a powerful leader of the Roman Church. He served as the Bishop of Rome from May 715 until his death in February 731. Born in 669 to Marcellus and Honesta, he came from a noble Roman family. Some older stories suggest he was related to the Savelli family, but historians find this unreliable. As a young man, he rose through the ranks of the papal court. He served as a subdeacon and a sacellarius during the time of Pope Sergius I. Later, he became a deacon in charge of the Vatican Library. He also worked as a papal secretary under Pope Constantine.
Gregory's early career involved high-level diplomacy. In 711, he traveled to Constantinople to represent the papacy. He handled difficult negotiations regarding the canons of the Quinisext Council. Because of his work, Emperor Justinian II agreed that the papacy could ignore certain council decisions. After Pope Constantine died on April 9, 715, Gregory was elected to the papacy. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Rome on May 19, 715. His leadership would soon face many natural and political challenges.
One of Gregory's first major tasks was repairing the Aurelian Walls in Rome. He began this work at the Porta Tiburtina. However, a major disaster struck in October 716 when the Tiber River flooded. The water stayed for eight days and caused immense damage to the city. The floods covered the Campus Martius and reached the foot of the Capitoline Hill. Gregory ordered many litanies, which are special prayers, to try to stop the water. He also spent much of his time restoring religious buildings. He restored the monastery of Monte Cassino in 718. He also turned his own family home into the monastery of St. Agatha in Suburra.
Gregory was very active in spreading Christianity through missionary work. In 716, he met with Duke Theodo of Bavaria to discuss the conversion of his lands. Gregory sent delegates to establish a local church hierarchy overseen by an archbishop. In 718, an Anglo-Saxon named Winfrid asked to preach in Germany. Gregory commissioned him in 719 and gave him the name Boniface. In 722, Gregory summoned Boniface to Rome to check his doctrinal purity. During this meeting, Boniface noted that Gregory's Latin was difficult to understand. This interaction shows that Vulgar Latin was evolving into the Romance languages. Gregory eventually made Boniface a bishop in November 722.
Managing relationships with the Lombards was a constant struggle for Gregory. He tried to maintain diplomacy with King Liutprand. In 729, they met at the ancient city of Sutri. They signed the Donation of Sutri, which gave the papacy the town of Sutri and hill towns in Latium. This was a major moment because it was the first time the papacy gained territory outside of the Duchy of Rome. However, not all Lombards were friendly. In 717, Duke Romuald II of Benevento captured Cumae. Gregory had to fund the Duke of Naples to help retake that territory. He also had to broker deals to stop fighting between the Lombards and the Byzantine exarchs.
Gregory also faced intense conflict with the Byzantine Emperor Leo III. Around 722, the Emperor tried to raise taxes on papal lands in Italy. Leo needed this money for wars against the Arabs. Gregory refused to pay because he needed the money to buy food for the people of Rome. This defiance led the Roman people to drive the imperial governor out of the city. Tensions grew even higher in 726 when Leo issued an iconoclast edict. Iconoclasm was a policy that condemned the possession of icons, which are sacred images of saints. Gregory immediately rejected this rule. This caused the armies in Ravenna to revolt against the Emperor.
These conflicts changed the course of history for the Church. Gregory's refusal to follow the Emperor's religious and tax rules created a gap between Rome and the Eastern Empire. This period of revolt and civil war helped lead to the establishment of the temporal power of the popes. This means the popes eventually gained the power to rule over specific lands and governments. Gregory died on February 11, 731. He left behind a papacy that was more independent and more involved in the politics of Europe.
