The university operates through a complex academic structure. The main campus in Bogotá features 18 schools and 61 departments. These departments offer 242 different academic programs to students. This variety creates a multidisciplinary environment where many subjects meet. The Pance campus in Cali also provides diverse learning opportunities. Academic quality is a central part of the university's identity. The Ministry of National Education granted the institution high-quality institutional accreditation. This accreditation was provided for eight years starting on June 12, 2003. Many individual programs also hold specific high-quality accreditations. For example, the Law School received this status via Resolution 6808 on August 6, 2010. Currently, 21 undergraduate programs hold this accreditation. Eight other programs are also in advanced stages of the process.
The history of the university spans several centuries. It began in 1604 as the College of the Society of Jesus in Santafé de Bogotá. In 1623, the Audience and the Archbishop recognized its academic degrees. This era included famous students like Pedro Claver. However, the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish colonies in 1767. This event closed the first era of the school. It took 163 years for the university to be restored. In 1937, the School of Economics and Legal Sciences was founded. The Cali branch began its programs in 1970 following community petitions.
The Bogotá campus is a large and active urban space. It covers 445 acres and includes approximately 202,988 square meters of construction.
