It is the third most widespread rat species in the entire world. This species follows closely behind the brown rat and the black rat. While its name suggests a specific home, the rat actually originated in Southeast Asia. It has since migrated to many different locations across the Pacific. These locations include New Zealand, Easter Island, and Hawaii. Because they are so adaptable, they can live in many environments. They thrive in both thick forests and open grasslands. 
Physically, the Polynesian rat has several distinct features. It has a thin and long body that reaches up to 25 centimeters in length. This measurement goes from the nose to the base of the tail. On small islands, these rats are often even smaller, measuring only about 15 centimeters. They possess large, round ears and a pointed snout. Their hair is usually black or brown, but their bellies are a lighter color. You can identify them by a dark upper edge on their hind feet near the ankle. The rest of the foot remains pale. They also have comparatively small feet when compared to other rat species. 
The behavior of these rats is shaped by their need to survive and find food. They are nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the night. They are also excellent climbers that often build nests in trees. As omnivores, they eat a wide variety of things. Their diet includes seeds, fruit, leaves, and bark. The reproduction of the Polynesian rat is quite rapid. They are polyestrous, which means they can have multiple breeding cycles. Their gestation period, or the time the young develop inside the mother, lasts 21 to 24 days. A single litter usually contains between 6 and 11 pups. The size of the litter depends on how much food and other resources are available. After birth, it takes about 28 days for the pups to be weaned. Unlike some other rats, they do not breed all year long. Instead, their breeding is restricted to the spring and summer months. 
These rats can have a massive impact on the ecosystems they enter. In the Pacific, they have been linked to the extinction of many native birds and insects. Many of these species evolved without any mammals around them. Because of this, they had no natural defenses against rat predators. On Easter Island, the rats may have caused complete deforestation. They did this by eating the nuts of the local *Paschalococos* palm trees. This prevented new trees from growing back. In New Zealand, the arrival of the rats led to the loss of several species of seabirds and land birds. 
Today, many conservation groups work hard to manage Polynesian rat populations. In New Zealand, the Department of Conservation works to remove rats from offshore islands. This helps protect critically endangered species like the kākāpō parrot. Removing rats has allowed populations of insects, like the Little Barrier Island giant wētā, to grow again. Some groups also use poison baiting to protect birds. For example, on Henderson Island, a program targeted a population of 50,000 to 100,000 rats. The program was very intense, but 60 to 80 individuals survived. Even so, the population has since fully recovered. However, some islands, like Mauitaha and Araara, are kept as sanctuaries for the rats.
