The share is attached to the frog, which is the iron base of the plough. The slice is then lifted by the mouldboard, a curved plate. As the plough moves, the slice rolls over and drops upside down into the furrow. This pattern of ridges and furrows helps the soil drain water effectively. This is especially helpful when snow melts in the spring.

Ploughs have evolved through many distinct stages and types. The earliest version was the ard, or scratch plough. The Romans called these wheel-less tools the aratrum. An ard consists of a beam and a pointed stick called a head. It cuts a shallow furrow suitable for cereal crops in light soil.

Because of this, many now use conservation tillage. This method uses shallower ploughing to be less invasive to the earth.
