Nymphs live underwater for one to four years. They grow by molting. Molting is when an insect sheds its old skin to grow. After many molts, they leave the water. They change into adults. Adults have two or three pairs of wings. The name Plecoptera means "braided-wings." This is because the veins in their wings look like braids. Most adults do not fly very well. Some even have no wings at all. They usually live for only a few weeks.

During this time, they molt between 12 and 36 times. Molting is when they shed their skin to grow larger.
