The memory can run at a maximum clock frequency of 2.75 GHz. This provides a memory bandwidth of 176 GB/s. The system also includes secondary custom chips for background tasks. These chips manage downloading, uploading, and social gameplay features. This allows these tasks to run while you are playing a game. An audio module supports in-game chat and many audio streams. The console also features a hardware zlib decompression module. This helps the system process data more efficiently during gameplay.
Sony released different versions of the hardware over time to meet different needs. The original model was the standard version released in late 2013. In September 2016, Sony introduced a smaller, refreshed version called the "Slim." This model had a smaller form factor than the original. At the same time, Sony released the PlayStation 4 Pro. The Pro is a high-end version designed for better performance. It features an upgraded GPU and a higher CPU clock rate. This allows it to support 4K resolution in supported games. All these models remain compatible with the same software library. 

The history of the PS4 began much earlier than its release date. Lead architect Mark Cerny started development as early as 2008. Sony wanted to avoid the production delays that affected the PlayStation 3. In 2012, Sony began shipping development kits to game creators. These kits were known as "Orbis." They consisted of modified PCs running the AMD APU chipset. Sony officially announced the console in February 2013 in New York City. This event was called PlayStation Meeting 2013. The PS4's success is reflected in its massive sales numbers. By October 2019, it was the second best-selling PlayStation console ever. Only the PlayStation 2 has sold more units. The console's popularity helped Sony lead global console sales. Sony even expanded into the Chinese market in May 2014. This was a major move because of the market's enormous size. Even as the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, the PS4 remained relevant. A global chip shortage between 2020 and 2023 actually kept production going. This helped Sony meet the high demand for its newer hardware.
Users interact with the system primarily through the DualShock 4 controller.
