As technology evolved, educators sought to make these models larger and more theatrical. In the late 18th century, Adam Walker and his sons attempted to combine education with theatrical illusion. Walker's "Eidouranion" was a massive machine standing twenty feet high. It featured large globes that appeared to be suspended in space without support. 
The modern era of planetariums began with the development of the optical projector. In 1923, the first Zeiss Model I planetarium projected images onto a 16-meter concrete dome. 
Today, planetariums vary significantly in their capacity and specialized features. The Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, India, holds the record for the largest seating capacity with 630 seats. 
Digital advancements have further expanded what a planetarian, a professional staff member, can show an audience. In 1983, the first digital planetarium projector, the Digistar I, was installed in Salt Lake City. This system used vector graphics to display starfields and line art. Current generations of projectors, such as the Digistar 3, utilize fulldome video technology. This allows operators to project any image imaginable onto the dome. These tools connect astronomy to computer science, allowing us to visualize the sky from points far distant in space and time.
