Later, people used devices called orreries to show the Solar System. In 1781, Eise Eisinga finished a planetarium in his own living room.

The Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, India, has the most seats with 630. The Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium in New Jersey is the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

Today, technology makes the stars feel closer than ever. Digital projectors like the Digistar systems show beautiful computer graphics.

Humanity has attempted to model the heavens for thousands of years. The ancient Greek polymath Archimedes is credited with creating a primitive device to predict the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. Later, the discovery of the Antikythera mechanism proved that complex astronomical devices existed in antiquity. During the Middle Ages, Campanus of Novara described a planetary equatorium and provided instructions for building one. In the 17th century, the Globe of Gottorf featured constellations painted on its interior. Many of these historical devices are now classified as orreries, which are models of the Solar System.

As technology evolved, educators sought to make these models larger and more theatrical. In the late 18th century, Adam Walker and his sons attempted to combine education with theatrical illusion. Walker's "Eidouranion" was a massive machine standing twenty feet high. It featured large globes that appeared to be suspended in space without support.

Another remarkable historical example is the planetarium built by Eise Eisinga. Completed in 1781 after seven years of work, it was built in his own living room. It remains the oldest still-working planetarium in the world.

The modern era of planetariums began with the development of the optical projector. In 1923, the first Zeiss Model I planetarium projected images onto a 16-meter concrete dome.

This was a major breakthrough because the projector generated all necessary movements of stars and planets internally. Following this success, Zeiss planetariums opened in cities like Rome, Chicago, and Osaka. The mid-20th century also saw a surge in popularity due to the Space Race. This era prompted a massive program that installed over 1,200 planetariums in high schools across the United States.

Today, planetariums vary significantly in their capacity and specialized features. The Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, India, holds the record for the largest seating capacity with 630 seats.

In North America, the Hayden Planetarium in New York City has the most seats at 423. For sheer size, the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium in New Jersey is the largest in the Western Hemisphere, with a 27-meter diameter dome. Some facilities have even rebranded as "dome theaters." These locations offer wide-screen or "wraparound" films and laser shows that combine music with light patterns.

Digital advancements have further expanded what a planetarian, a professional staff member, can show an audience. In 1983, the first digital planetarium projector, the Digistar I, was installed in Salt Lake City. This system used vector graphics to display starfields and line art. Current generations of projectors, such as the Digistar 3, utilize fulldome video technology. This allows operators to project any image imaginable onto the dome. These tools connect astronomy to computer science, allowing us to visualize the sky from points far distant in space and time.
