She had never played the bass before, but she joined the group.

In 1987, the band recorded a 17-track demo known as the "Purple Tape." This was named for its purple cover. The demo helped them sign with the British record label 4AD. Their first release was the mini-LP Come On Pilgrim in 1987. This was followed by the full-length album Surfer Rosa in 1988. Surfer Rosa was recorded by producer Steve Albini in just two weeks. The album earned acclaim in Europe and was later certified gold in the United States in 2005.

In 1989, the band released Doolittle, which became a major milestone. They used a production budget of US$40,000 for this album. This was four times the budget used for Surfer Rosa. Doolittle had a cleaner sound thanks to producer Gil Norton. The album reached number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. It also peaked at number 98 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The single "Monkey Gone to Heaven" became a hit on alternative rock radio.

Internal tensions eventually led to the band's first breakup. Growing conflicts between Kim Deal and Black Francis became difficult to manage. After the "Fuck or Fight" tour in the United States, the members were exhausted. In early 1993, Francis announced the band was finished. He notified the other members via fax. The members pursued different paths for several years. Deal formed the band the Breeders, while Francis performed as Frank Black. Lovering even worked as a magician performing "scientific phenomenalism."

The Pixies reunited in 2004 for a massive world tour. Tickets for these shows sold out within minutes. The band has continued to record new music with different members. Kim Deal left in 2012 and was replaced by Kim Shattuck and later Paz Lenchantin. With Lenchantin, they released albums like Head Carrier in 2016 and Doggerel in 2022. In 2024, they released their ninth album, The Night the Zombies Came. Their musical legacy continues to influence many modern acts, including Nirvana and Radiohead.
