The Pitcairn Islands are in the ocean.
The Pitcairn Islands are in the Pacific Ocean.
Most of the land is on one island. Only one island has people living on it. This place is very small.
Long ago, people from a ship lived here. They came from a boat called the Bounty. They lived by fishing and farming.
Today, very few people live there. There are only 35 people in the group. This is the smallest group of people in the world.
It is a quiet place far out at sea.
The Pitcairn Islands sit in the southern Pacific Ocean.
The islands have a long history. Many years ago, Polynesians lived there. Later, people from a ship arrived. These were mutineers from the HMS Bounty.
Today, the islands are very quiet. In 2023, only 35 people lived there. This is the smallest territory in the world.
The Pitcairn Islands are a group of four volcanic islands. They sit in the southern Pacific Ocean.
Life on the islands began a long time ago. Polynesians were the first people to live there. They stayed on Pitcairn and Henderson for many centuries. Later, they left the islands and they were empty for a while. European sailors found the islands much later. A Portuguese sailor named Pedro Fernandes de Queirós arrived in 1606. He saw Ducie and Henderson Islands. He gave them new names in Spanish. Later, a British ship called the HMS Swallow saw Pitcairn. A young crew member named Robert Pitcairn saw it first. The island was named to honor him.
A famous story connects the islands to a ship. In 1790, a group of people arrived on Pitcairn. These were nine mutineers from the HMS Bounty. They came with twelve Tahitian women and one baby girl.
Many different ships visited the islands over the years. In 1808, an American ship called the Topaz arrived. This was the first ship to visit since the Bounty.
Today, the Pitcairn Islands are a very small place. In 2023, only 35 people lived there permanently. This makes it the smallest territory in the whole world.

Before Europeans arrived, Polynesians were the first to settle the islands. They occupied Pitcairn and Henderson for several centuries. Evidence suggests Henderson was likely abandoned before the 16th century. Pitcairn was likely abandoned during the 17th or early 18th century. The islands remained uninhabited until European explorers arrived. In 1606, Portuguese sailor Pedro Fernandes de Queirós reached Ducie and Henderson Islands. He named them La Encarnación and San Juan Bautista. Some sources suggest he may have visited different islands. Later, in 1767, the HMS Swallow sighted Pitcairn Island. The island was named for Robert Pitcairn, a 15-year-old midshipman. His father was a British Marine Major named John Pitcairn.
A famous event involving the HMS Bounty shaped the islands' history. In 1790, nine mutineers from the Bounty arrived on Pitcairn. They were accompanied by twelve Tahitian women and one baby girl.

Contact with the outside world happened slowly over many years. Ducie Island was rediscovered in 1791 by Captain Edward Edwards. The American sealing ship Topaz was the first to visit Pitcairn in 1808. Later, the British Royal Navy found the island in 1814. By that time, only one mutineer, John Adams, was still alive. He was eventually granted amnesty for his role in the mutiny. Other islands were also discovered by Europeans during this era. Henderson was found in 1819, and Oeno was found in 1824. These discoveries helped connect the islands back to the rest of the world.
The islands became a British colony on 30 November 1838. This was a significant moment for the local community. At that time, the territory became one of the first to grant voting rights to women. In the mid-1850s, the population grew too large for the island. In 1856, 193 people moved to Norfolk Island on the ship Morayshire. However, many islanders eventually chose to return home. By 1881, visitors found the remaining people to be very happy and healthy.
The islands have also faced very serious social challenges. Due to extreme isolation, widespread sexual abuse went undetected for a long time. In 1999, a police officer named Gail Cox uncovered these allegations. This led to a major criminal investigation known as Operation Unique. The investigation involved interviewing many people from the island's past. It revealed that many young girls had been victims of assault. This caused great distress within the community and the wider world. In 2004, several men faced high-profile sexual assault trials.
Today, the Pitcairn Islands remain a unique and tiny territory. In 2023, the permanent population was only 35 people. This makes it the smallest territory in the world by number of residents. Most people live in the settlement of Adamstown. The islands are part of a larger geological group called the Tuamotus. They represent a small but significant part of the Pacific Ocean's geography. The history of the islands shows how isolated communities can develop in unique ways. Their story involves explorers, mutineers, and a very small, resilient population.
