Pisa is a city and municipality located in Tuscany, within Central Italy.

The origins of Pisa are rooted in antiquity. Many historians believe the name comes from the Etruscans. The word may mean "mouth," referring to the city's position at the mouth of the Arno.

Throughout the Roman era, the city's relationship with the coast changed due to geography. Pisa was likely founded on the shore. However, alluvial sediments from the Arno and the Serchio rivers caused the shoreline to move west.
During the Middle Ages, Pisa rose to become a dominant maritime power. In the seventh century, the city supplied ships to Pope Gregory I for military expeditions. By the 11th century, Pisa reached its apex as one of Italy's four main maritime republics.
This period of wealth led to a massive building program. The city constructed a magnificent cathedral and other structures that form the Piazza dei Miracoli.
Pisa's success also triggered intense rivalries, particularly with the city of Genoa. These conflicts involved battles on both land and sea. In 1135, the Council of Pisa helped resolve a conflict between two popes. This led to an agreement that established specific spheres of influence for Pisa and Genoa. At its peak, Pisa's power was recognized by Emperor Frederick I. He granted the Pisans freedom of trade throughout the empire. This included the coast from Civitavecchia to Portovenere and various territories in the Kingdom of Sicily. However, this rapid growth also caused resentment among neighboring cities like Lucca, Volterra, and Florence.
Today, Pisa remains a significant center for education and culture. The University of Pisa has a history dating back to the 12th century.
