Initially, Douglas misidentified the tree as *Pinus resinosa*, or red pine. By 1829, he realized it was a new species. He chose the name *Pinus ponderosa* because the wood is heavy. In 1836, a Scottish nurseryman named Charles Lawson formally described and named the species. In 1949, the state of Montana adopted the tree as its official state tree.

Taxonomy, the science of naming and classifying organisms, is often debated regarding this tree. Different scientific databases disagree on how many varieties exist. For example, the USDA PLANTS database lists five varieties. However, the World Flora Online only recognizes two. Some researchers, like Robert Z. Callaham, suggest there are five subspecies. Others, like Christopher J. Earle, recognize only three subspecies and two separate species. This complexity shows how much scientists are still learning about the tree's relationships.

Despite these debates, the ponderosa pine remains a massive and vital part of North American forests. Some individual trees reach incredible heights. In 2011, a Pacific ponderosa pine in Oregon's Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest was measured using a laser. While it was a very tall specimen, it was eventually surpassed in height records by a *Pinus lambertiana*. Regardless of its specific classification, the ponderosa pine continues to be a dominant and widespread presence in the western landscape.
