Pilates is a way to move.

Pilates is a way to exercise your mind and body.

Pilates focuses on your core. The core is the group of muscles in your abdomen, low back, and hips. Some people call this area the powerhouse. This part of your body helps you stay steady and balanced. The exercises also teach you how to breathe well.

Pilates is a specialized mind-body exercise system. It focuses on improving physical abilities through the coordination of the mind and the body. Unlike cardiovascular workouts, Pilates is primarily a strength and flexibility workout. It requires core stability, muscle control, posture, and specific breathing patterns. As of 2023, over 12 million people practice this method worldwide.
The mechanism of Pilates relies heavily on the "powerhouse." This term refers to the muscles of the abdomen, the low back, and the hips. These muscles provide the stability needed for all other movements. During a lesson, a student performs a limited number of repetitions. These are low-impact exercises, meaning they are gentle on the joints. Practitioners use their breath to power their muscles with energy. This creates a deep mind-body connection during every movement.
Joseph Pilates developed this method during his lifetime. He was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany. He found inspiration for his work while at the Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man during World War I. He spent four years there developing a system to strengthen the human mind and body. He believed that mental and physical health were interrelated. He originally named his specific method "Contrology." He published two books on his system in 1934 and 1945.
To perform his exercises, Joseph Pilates invented several pieces of equipment called apparatuses. These tools help accelerate stretching, strengthening, and body alignment. One major machine is the Reformer, originally called the Universal Reformer. Other apparatuses include the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, the High "Electric" Chair, the Spine Corrector, the Ladder Barrel, and the Pedi-Pole.
Today, the practice is divided into several distinct styles. Contrology is the original method created by Joseph Pilates. It uses a specific order of exercises and strict rules for teaching. Classical Pilates includes small changes, such as new exercises or minor variations in order. Contemporary Pilates involves more significant modifications. This style may include new equipment or different breathing patterns. Some people even create hybrid forms, such as Yogilates, AquaPilates, or Piloxing.
There is an ongoing debate regarding these different styles. Classical enthusiasts believe the term "Pilates" should only apply to the original Contrology. They worry that modern changes might degrade the method. Contemporary enthusiasts argue that new scientific knowledge about the body should be included. They believe Joseph Pilates would have continued to modify his work if he were alive. This tension exists because the transition between styles happens gradually over time.
Pilates can be compared to yoga, though they have key differences. Both are low-impact, mind-body disciplines that use stretching and breathing. However, yoga often focuses on spiritual aspects and holding poses for long periods. In Pilates, people move their limbs while in certain positions. While yoga uses breath for relaxation, Pilates uses breath to power muscles. Most yoga poses begin from a standing position, while many Pilates exercises start lying down.
Scientific studies on the effectiveness of Pilates have yielded mixed results. A 2012 systematic review examined the existing literature on the practice. In 2015, the Australian Government's Department of Health reviewed 17 alternative therapies. They found that the effectiveness of Pilates was uncertain due to limited study methods. Consequently, the Australian government decided it would not qualify for insurance subsidies in 2017. While evidence for treating lower back pain is considered low-quality, Pilates remains a tool for rehabilitation in many conditions.
