It is the second-largest city in this province, following the coastal city of Durban. The city serves as a major economic and industrial hub for the uMgungundlovu District Municipality. This region is vital for producing timber, dairy products, and aluminium.

The city's economy relies on several different industrial and agricultural sectors. Large-scale production of aluminium and cooking oil provides a substantial part of the local output. Nearby, extensive timber plantations and citrus farms contribute significantly to the regional economy. Until the late 1990s, the area was also famous for making textiles and footwear. One well-known example was the production of Doc Marten shoes. While these specific industries have declined due to lower costs in Asia, other sectors continue to grow. For instance, the Liberty Group has invested in large shopping centres and hotels.

The history of the site is tied to the Zulu Empire and the Voortrekkers. Before the city was established, the location was known as uMgungundlovu. In the Zulu language, this name can mean "Place of the Elephant" or "The elephant wins." Legend says that King Shaka's warriors hunted elephants there to sell ivory to traders. In April 1838, Voortrekkers occupied the area following the death of Piet Retief. The city was named after leaders Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz. However, neither man actually lived in the city; Retief was killed by King Dingane, and Maritz died eighty kilometres away.

Political changes shaped the city's administration over many decades. After the Voortrekkers settled, Pietermaritzburg became the capital of the short-lived Natalia Republic. In 1843, Britain took control and made it the seat of the Natal Colony. During this time, Fort Napier was built to house a military garrison. In 1893, the city gained its own assembly and a city hall.

When the Union of South Africa formed in 1910, Pietermaritzburg became one of the country's capitals. Later, during the apartheid era, the city was divided into segregated sections for different racial groups.

A significant moment in global history occurred at the Pietermaritzburg Railway Station. In June 1893, a young Mahatma Gandhi was traveling to Pretoria. Even though he held a first-class ticket, he was ordered to move to a different carriage. After being removed from the train, Gandhi spent a cold winter night in the station waiting room. This experience of racial discrimination led him to decide to fight for justice in South Africa. He developed a method of nonviolent resistance called Satyagraha. Today, a bronze statue of Gandhi stands in Church Street to honor this event.

Education and government are central to life in the city today. The University of KwaZulu-Natal has a campus here and was once known as the University of Natal.

This institution was an important voice in the struggle against apartheid. The city is also a major center for government employment. In 2004, Pietermaritzburg became the sole capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province. This followed a period where it shared capital status with Ulundi. The decision led to more government offices moving to the city. This shift has helped modernize the city centre and increase housing developments.

Transportation connects Pietermaritzburg to the rest of South Africa. The city sits on the N3 highway, which is the main route between Durban and the Pretoria area. For air travel, Pietermaritzburg Airport offers regular flights to Johannesburg. The railway station serves long-distance trains traveling between Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. Within the city, many people rely on minibus taxis for their daily travel. There are also regular bus services that connect the city to other major urban areas. This network of roads, rails, and air routes makes the city a vital link in the region.
