His family lived in several locations, including Conegliano, Belluno, and Casarsa della Delizia. These frequent dislocations were difficult for him. However, they expanded his literary interests. He read authors such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, and Coleridge. He also moved away from the religious fervor of his childhood toward atheism.

Language and heritage were central to his identity. Although he did not speak it natively, Pasolini learned the Friulan language to write poetry. He described this learning process as a "mystic act of love."

In 1943, he co-founded the Academiuta della lenga furlana, or the Academy of the Friulan Language. He wanted to give the Friulan dialect a status equal to the official regional standard. This commitment to cultural preservation was a key part of his early intellectual development.

World War II brought significant changes to his political views. Pasolini was drafted into the Italian Army during the waning years of the war. After his regiment was captured by German forces, he escaped to Casarsa. The death of his brother, Guido, in 1945 deeply devastated him. These experiences led Pasolini to move from his youth's conservative values toward Marxism. He began to criticize the "Americanization" of Italy and the rise of consumerism. He saw this as a form of cultural degeneration.

In 1950, Pasolini moved to Rome to begin a new chapter.

He also sold his books at sidewalk shops known as bancarelle. His literary career grew with the publication of his first novel, Ragazzi di vita, in 1955. This book dealt with the Roman lumpenproletariat, or the underclass. It was successful but led to an obscenity lawsuit from the Italian government.

His writing often combined socio-political critiques with examinations of taboo subjects. In 1966, he wrote a screenplay about Saint Paul that reimagined the apostle in a modern context. This work placed Paul in settings involving fascism and American capitalism. His later novel, Il Petrolio, criticized corruption within the government and corporate sectors.

Despite the tragedy, his artistic legacy continues to be studied globally.
