These findings were published in 2005. The research team included José Napoleon Hernández from the IGVSB. They also worked with Diego Deiros and Carlos Rodriguez from the USB. Two guides from Inparques also helped with the work.
To get reliable data, scientists used a geodetic network. This is a system of points used for precise mapping. The network included the vertices of Pico Bolívar, El Toro, Piedras Blancas, and the Mucuñuque Observatory. The observatory belongs to the Venezuelan Red Geocentric, or REGVEN. The team used five GPS dual frequency receivers. They made sure the measurements were continuous and long. This helped them gather a large volume of data. Such data ensures that the information is consistent and reliable.
The environment of the mountain has changed significantly over time. During the Pleistocene epoch, the area experienced the Merida glaciation. During this time, glaciers covered a massive area of 600 km2. These glaciers covered mountains that were at least 3,000 metres high. By 1910, the glaciated area had shrunk to about 15 km2. This ice was split into two large sections. One section covered Picos Bolívar, Espejo, and Concha. The other covered Picos Humboldt and Bonpland. 
Recent decades have seen the rapid loss of these glaciers. In 1952, aerial photos showed the ice was already much smaller. By 2003, almost all glaciers in the area had disappeared. Only two small areas of ice remained. One was on Pico Bolívar and one was on Pico Humboldt. The glaciers on Pico Bolívar disappeared completely by 2012.
