They use mimesis to hide. Mimesis means they look like something else. Leaf insects look just like real leaves. Some have edges that look like bite marks. To hide even better, they rock back and forth. This makes them look like a leaf in the wind. 
Female leaf insects have very large front wings. These wings look like the veins of a leaf. Even their eggs look like seeds to stay safe. Baby leaf insects start out red. They turn green after they eat leaves. 
Scientists have studied these bugs for a long time. A man named Antonio Pigafetta wrote about them. He saw them on the island of Cimbonbon. Fossils show these bugs have not changed much. A 47-million-year-old fossil looks very much like they do now.

Because they are so interesting, some species are kept as pets. People often keep species like Cryptophyllium celebicum or Pulchriphyllium giganteum.
