Later, inventors like Nicéphore Niépce worked to keep these images forever. In 1826, Niépce made a famous view from his window. This is the earliest surviving photograph of a real scene.

Many inventors helped make photography what it is today. Louis Daguerre created a faster way to take pictures in 1837. He even took a photo of a Paris street in 1838.

In the 6th century, Anthemius of Tralles used it for experiments. The Arab physicist Ibn al-Haytham provided the first correct analysis. He understood the relationship between the pinhole and the focal point. He even used a screen to project images in a dark room.

Renaissance painters also used this tool to study light and color.

True photography required finding ways to make images permanent. Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photoetching in 1822. In 1826, he produced "View from the Window at Le Gras." This is the earliest surviving photograph of a real-world scene.

His process required very long exposures. It could take eight hours or even several days. Later, Louis Daguerre improved these results. He developed the daguerreotype process by 1837. This used a silver-plated surface and mercury vapor. It reduced exposure times to just a few minutes.

Other inventors made huge contributions during the 1830s and 1840s. William Fox Talbot created the calotype process in 1840. His method used a translucent negative. This allowed for the creation of many positive copies. This was a major difference from the daguerreotype.

In Brazil, Hércules Florence worked on silver-salt paper processes. He used the term "photographia" in his notebooks as early as 1834. The chemist John Herschel also played a key role. He was the first to use the terms "photography," "negative," and "positive." He also discovered how to "fix" images using sodium thiosulphate. This made photographs completely light-fast and permanent.

Today, photography connects many different scientific and creative worlds. It allows us to see things the human eye cannot easily capture. For example, we can photograph Saturn's rings in ultraviolet light. It is used in manufacturing through processes like photolithography. It is also a central part of modern mass communication. From professional studios to a simple smartphone, the goal remains the same. We are still using light to draw our world.
