Satiation occurs when workers stop preferring a specific food type after eating it alone for several weeks. Alternation involves the ants switching between protein-rich and carbohydrate-rich foods when both are available. To prepare for food shortages, the colony uses a special caste called replete workers. These individuals have enormous gasters, which are the rear parts of the abdomen, to store excess food. They can later regurgitate this stored food to help the colony survive.
