First, animals grew hard shells. This helped them stay safe. Then, plants began to grow on land.
Fish lived in the water. Soon, new animals walked on the ground. The land changed too. All the lands joined into one big piece.

The Phanerozoic is the current eon of Earth. An eon is a very large part of time. 
In the beginning, animals grew hard shells. This helped them leave fossils in the ground. 

Later, the Mesozoic era began. This is often called the Age of Dinosaurs. 
The most recent era is the Cenozoic. This era began after the dinosaurs died out. Birds and mammals grew to be very diverse. 
The continents have changed too. They once joined into one big landmass called Pangaea. Now, they are in the places we see today. 
The Phanerozoic is the most recent eon in Earth's history. An eon is a huge span of geologic time. 
Life changed in many steps during this eon. First, animals in the Cambrian period grew shells and different body plans. 


Scientists have studied these changes for a long time. In 1930, an American geologist named George Halcott Chadwick named this eon.
This eon is divided into three main eras. The Paleozoic era was a time of early animals and fish.

The Phanerozoic is the current and latest of the four geologic eons in Earth's history. An eon is a massive span of geologic time. This eon began approximately 538.8 million years ago. It marks the period when abundant animal and plant life began to flourish. Life diversified and colonized many different niches on the Earth's surface. 
The mechanism of the Phanerozoic is tied to biological and tectonic changes. Tectonic forces moved the continents over millions of years. These forces once collected landmasses into a single supercontinent called Pangaea. Eventually, Pangaea separated into the current continental landmasses we see today. 
The Phanerozoic is divided into three distinct eras. The first is the Paleozoic Era. This era saw the evolution of arthropods, molluscs, and chordates. Chordates include fish, amphibians, and early land-dwelling amniotes. The second is the Mesozoic Era. This is often called the Age of Reptiles or the Age of Dinosaurs. It featured the rise of crocodilians, turtles, and dinosaurs. The third is the Cenozoic Era. This era began after the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs and marine reptiles. It is characterized by the great diversification of birds and mammals.
The Paleozoic Era contains six specific periods. The Cambrian period saw the rise of armored arthropods like trilobites. The Ordovician period included the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. During the Ordovician, the first arthropods began to colonize the continent of Gondwana. The Silurian period saw a warming of the Earth. This allowed vascular plants, such as spore-producing ferns, to move further inland. The Devonian period is known as the "Age of the Fish." It featured a huge diversification of both jawless and jawed fish. 

History shows how our understanding of this eon has changed. The term "Phanerozoic" was coined in 1930 by George Halcott Chadwick. He was an American geologist. The name comes from Greek words meaning "visible life." Scientists originally thought life began in the Cambrian because of the fossil record. However, we now know complex life existed earlier. Trace fossils from the Ediacaran period show complex soft-bodied life. We also know simple microbial mats existed as far back as the Archean eon. 
The significance of these eras is shown through massive numbers and extinctions. The Permian extinction was the largest in Earth's history. It caused the loss of 95% of all species. The Ordovician-Silurian extinction was also deadly. It killed 60% of marine invertebrates and 25% of families. In the Devonian, a sequence of events killed 70% of all species. These events show how fragile life can be. They also show how life recovers and diversifies after such losses. 
These biological changes are connected to the Earth's atmosphere and climate. During the Carboniferous, high oxygen levels allowed arthropods to grow very large. This happened because of the massive wetland rainforests. In the Devonian, the "greening event" allowed new habitats for arthropods to form. The movement of continents like Laurentia and Baltica also changed the oceans. When Gondwana moved toward the South Pole, it caused glaciation. These shifts in geology and chemistry drive the evolution of life.
