In these cases, the hydrocarbons are tightly bound to the rock fabric by strong capillary forces. These reservoirs do not require a traditional cap rock to keep the oil and gas in place.
To keep hydrocarbons from escaping, nature must create a trap. Petroleum geologists identify three primary categories of traps. Structural traps are formed by changes in the Earth's subsurface structure, such as folding or faulting. These create shapes like domes or anticlines that catch rising oil. Stratigraphic traps occur when there are lateral or vertical changes in rock thickness or texture, such as in reefs. The rarest type is the hydrodynamic trap, which is caused by differences in water pressure. 
The seal or cap rock is essential for preventing further upward migration. A capillary seal forms when the pressure required to move fluids through the rock pores is greater than the buoyancy of the oil. There are two ways these seals can leak. A membrane seal leaks when the pressure difference exceeds a specific threshold, but it will reseal once the pressure drops. A hydraulic seal occurs in rocks like tight shales or evaporites. In these rocks, the pressure required to fracture the rock is actually lower than the pressure needed to move the fluid through the pores.
The petroleum industry is divided into three distinct sectors. The upstream sector involves the production of crude oil from wells and the separation of water from the oil. The midstream sector focuses on the transport of crude oil via pipelines or tankers. Finally, the downstream sector handles the refining of crude oil into usable products, their marketing, and their transport to stations.

These massive fields contain an estimated 66 to 104 billion barrels each. For natural gas, the largest field is the South Pars/Asalouyeh field, shared by Iran and Qatar. Other major gas fields include the Urengoy, Yamburg, and Vučkovec fields.
