Petrified Forest National Park is a protected area located in northeastern Arizona. 

The process of petrification turned ancient wood into stone. During the Late Triassic Epoch, about 225 million years ago, this region was near the equator. The climate was humid and sub-tropical. 

The geology of the park is defined by the Chinle Formation. This formation is up to 100 feet thick in some areas. It consists of sedimentary rocks like mudstone, siltstone, and claystone. It also includes harder rocks like sandstone and limestone. Much of the clay is bentonite, which swells when wet and shrinks when dry. This movement makes it hard for plants to grow on the surface. Because there is little plant cover, the wind and water erode the land easily. This creates the colorful badlands, mesas, and buttes seen in the Painted Desert. 

Earth's tectonic forces changed the landscape significantly. About 60 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau began to rise. This uplift exposed the rock layers to more intense erosion. Wind and water have since removed almost all the rock layers above the Chinle Formation. This has created a massive unconformity, which is a break in the geological record. Only a few recent layers, like the Bidahochi Formation, remain in parts of the park. The Bidahochi contains ash and lava from ancient volcanic eruptions. These eruptions created volcanic landforms called maars, which are circular craters.
The park contains a vast array of fossilized life. Scientists have identified at least nine species of extinct fossil trees. Most of the petrified wood comes from an extinct conifer called Araucarioxylon arizonicum. The Chinle Formation is one of the richest fossil-plant deposits in the world. It contains over 200 different fossil plant taxa, including ferns, cycads, and ginkgoes. The park also hosts a diverse group of fossil animals. These include early theropod dinosaurs, large amphibians, and giant reptiles called phytosaurs. 

Human history in the park is also very long. The earliest inhabitants were Clovis-era people who arrived 13,000 years ago. These people are the ancestors of Native Americans. By 2,500 years ago, Ancestral Pueblo farmers lived in the area. They grew corn and lived in subterranean pit houses. About 1,000 years ago, they built masonry dwellings called pueblos. They also used large communal buildings called great kivas. By 1450 CE, these farmers migrated to the Hopi Mesas and Zuni. Today, thousands of their descendants still live in those communities. More than 1,000 archaeological sites, including petroglyphs, remain in the park. 
Today, the park is a place of scientific study and tourism. It was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. In 2018, the park welcomed 644,922 recreational visitors. The environment is a semi-desert shrub steppe with a dry, windy climate. It is home to over 400 plant species and 200 bird species. Animals like coyotes, bobcats, and pronghorns roam the land.
