Peter the Great started this huge project in 1709. He wanted to modernize Russia and show its new power. He wanted a place that felt like the royal courts in Europe. Today, the palace and its city center are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means the whole world agrees the site is very special.

The palace complex uses water in a very clever way.

Most of the fountains do not use any pumps at all. Instead, they use natural springs from the Upper Gardens. The water flows down from a high bluff to the shore. This height creates the pressure needed to make the water spray. This is a great technological achievement from a long time ago. It makes the fountains move using only the power of nature.

Many famous people helped design and build this beautiful place. The architect Domenico Trezzini worked there between 1714 and 1728. He helped start the Petrine Baroque style used in the city. Later, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli added wings to the Grand Palace. He worked on this expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond also designed the gardens in 1714. He had worked with famous landscapers in France before.

The gardens and buildings have many amazing details to see.

The Grand Cascade has 64 different fountains. One famous statue is the Samson Fountain from the 1730s. It shows Samson tearing open a lion's mouth. This represents a Russian victory in the Great Northern War. A jet of water shoots 20 meters high from the lion's mouth. Inside the Grand Palace, the Chesma Hall has twelve large paintings. These paintings show a great naval battle from 1768 to 1774.

Peterhof has faced many hard times throughout its long history.

Peterhof Palace is a massive ensemble of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, near Saint Petersburg, Russia.

It serves as a grand symbol of Russia's modernization and its access to the Baltic Sea. Often called the "Russian Versailles," the complex was inspired by the French royal court of Louis XIV. The site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status highlights its immense cultural and historical value to the entire world.

The complex is defined by a unique natural landscape. A dominant 16-meter-high bluff sits less than 100 meters from the shore. The Lower Gardens, or Nizhny Sad, cover about 1.02 square kilometers of land. These gardens are positioned between the bluff and the sea. They contain most of the famous fountains and several small outbuildings. To the east, the Alexandria Park features 19th-century Gothic Revival structures like the Kapella.

The centerpiece of Peterhof is the Grand Palace, known as the Bolshoi Dvorets. It sits atop the bluff, with the Upper Gardens located directly behind it. Below the palace, on the face of the bluff, lies the Grand Cascade. This massive water feature includes an artificial grotto made of hewn brown stone. The water from the Grand Cascade flows into a semicircular pool. This pool marks the end of the Sea Channel, a large waterwork of the Baroque period.

A remarkable technological achievement defines the fountains of Peterhof. Most of the fountains operate entirely without the use of mechanical pumps. Instead, they rely on the natural pressure created by gravity. Water is supplied by natural springs that collect in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. Because the Upper Gardens are at a higher elevation than the Lower Gardens, the water flows downward with great force. This natural pressure drives the spectacular displays seen in the Grand Cascade and throughout the park.

The Grand Cascade features 64 individual fountains. One of the most famous is the Samson Fountain, installed in the 1730s.

The statue depicts Samson tearing open the jaws of a lion. This imagery symbolizes Russia's victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War. The lion represents the Swedish coat of arms. A vertical jet of water shoots 20 meters high from the lion's mouth. This is the highest water jet in all of Peterhof. A replica of this masterpiece was installed in 1947 after the original was looted.

Many architects contributed to the development of the site over different eras. Peter the Great began construction on the Monplaisir Palace in 1714 based on his own sketches. Domenico Trezzini served as the architect from 1714 to 1728. His work helped establish the Petrine Baroque style used throughout Saint Petersburg. The French architect Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond designed the gardens in 1714. Later, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli expanded the Grand Palace between 1747 and 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia.

The Grand Palace contains rooms with incredible artistic detail. The Chesma Hall features twelve large paintings by the artist Jacob Philipp Hackert. These works, completed between 1771 and 1773, depict the Battle of Chesma from the Russo-Turkish War. Other rooms, like the East and West Chinese Cabinets, showcase decorative arts from the East. These rooms include Chinese landscape paintings in black and yellow lacquer. The walls are decorated with imitation Oriental patterns created by Russian craftsmen.

Peterhof has endured significant hardship during the 20th century. In 1941, German troops captured the palace during the Second World War. The occupying forces caused extensive damage, and the palace was partially exploded and burned. During the invasion, Soviet marines attempted a landing in the neighboring Alexandria Park in October 1941. This operation failed, and many marines fought hand-to-hand combat in the Lower Gardens. Restoration efforts began immediately after the war ended. While the name was briefly changed to "Petrodvorets" in 1944, the original name was restored in 1997.
