It sits just east of Tel Aviv within the Gush Dan metropolitan area. The city is often called "Em HaMoshavot," which means "Mother of the Moshavot." This nickname reflects its history as an early agricultural settlement. The name Petah Tikva itself comes from a biblical allusion in the book of Hosea. It refers to a "door of hope."

The city's history is deeply connected to the land and its challenges. In 1878, immigrants from Europe arrived to establish a new settlement. They originally wanted to live in the Achor Valley near Jericho. However, the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II forbade them from settling there. The settlers kept the name Petah Tikva to represent their original goals. They eventually purchased land northeast of Jaffa near the village of Mulabes. This land was owned by two Christian businessmen named Antoine Bishara Tayan and Selim Qassar.

Early settlement faced significant environmental obstacles. Much of the land in the Yarkon Valley was a malarial swamp. Malaria is a serious disease spread by mosquitoes in wet areas. Because of a massive malaria epidemic, many colonists abandoned the settlement by 1881. The community only became stable after the settlement was reoccupied in 1883. Baron Edmond de Rothschild provided the necessary funding to drain the swamps. This allowed the colony to grow into a successful farming center.

Archaeology reveals that people lived in this area long before the modern city. The site of Tel Mulabbis is an important archaeological mound. It is located within the Yarkon River basin. Researchers have found remains from many different historical periods there. These include the Roman, Byzantine, Early Islamic, Crusader, Mamluk, and Late Ottoman periods. Before the modern Jewish settlement, an Egyptian Arab village called Mulabbis also existed there. The Abu Hamed al-Masri clan inhabited this village before the middle of the 19th century.

These included Amishav, Ein Ganim, Kiryat Matalon, Kfar Ganim, Mahaneh Yehuda, and Kfar Avraham. As of 2026, the population exceeds 240,000 people.
