The way people speak in Peshawar has changed over time. For a long time, most people spoke a language called Hindko. This was the main way people talked during the colonial years. However, many people moved to the city from nearby rural areas. Many Afghan refugees also came to live there after the Soviet-Afghan War. The history of Peshawar is incredibly long and deep. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South Asia. Recorded history for the area dates back to at least the sixth century BC. In ancient times, it was a principal city of the Gandhara region. During the second century CE, it served as the capital of the Kushan Empire. At that time, the city held a population of about 120,000 people. This made it the seventh-most populous city in the world during that era.

Many different empires and groups have controlled the city over the centuries. The Greeks, led by Alexander the Great, subdued the valley in the fourth century BC. Later, the Mauryan Empire controlled the region. Around 46 CE, the Indo-Parthian founder Gondophares established the Takht-i-Bahi monastery nearby.

The Kushan Empire reached a golden age here under Kanishka the Great. However, the Sasanid Emperor Shapur I attacked the city around 260 CE. This campaign damaged many Buddhist monuments and monasteries in the valley. Later, the White Huns devastated the region in the 460s CE.

Religious and political shifts changed the city's character many times. Islam was introduced to the area in the later seventh century. In 1001 CE, Mahmud Ghazni defeated the Hindu Shahis at the Battle of Peshawar. This established rule by the Ghaznavid Empire. The city later became an important trading center for the Mughal Empire. From 1776, it served as the winter capital of the Durrani Empire. The Sikh Empire captured the city in 1823. Eventually, the East India Company took control in 1849, making it part of the British Raj.

The name "Peshawar" has several possible origins. Some believe it comes from the Sanskrit word "Purushapura." Another theory suggests it comes from the Persian word for a "frontier town." It may also relate to the Persian "Pesh Awardan," meaning "place of first arrival." This refers to Peshawar being the first city reached after crossing the Khyber Pass. The Mughal Emperor Akbar used the name "Parashawar." Over time, linguistic shifts changed this into the modern name we use today.

Language and culture in the city have undergone a massive transformation. During the colonial period, the lingua franca was Hindko. This was the primary language used for trade and business. However, rapid urbanization changed the city's makeup. Large numbers of people migrated from rural and tribal areas. Additionally, many Afghan refugees arrived following the Soviet-Afghan War. These migrations shifted the main language from Hindko to Pashto.

Today, most residents are Pashtuns. However, the original urban population, known as Peshoris, still lives in the central Walled City.

Peshawar remains a vital link between different regions and eras. It connects the Afghan plateau to the plains of India. Its history is visible in its many layers of architecture and ruins. From the ancient Buddhist stupas to the Mughal-era mosques, the city shows its past. The Mohabbat Khan Mosque features a famous white-marble façade from 1630. The city continues to be a major political and economic hub for the entire region.
