It is divided into three main stages. The first stage is Old Persian. This was used during the Achaemenid Empire from 550 to 330 BCE. The second stage is Middle Persian. This was the language of the Sasanian Empire from 224 to 651 CE. The third stage is New Persian, which is the version we know today.

Scholars say these three stages are actually one single language evolving over time. This is very special because it is hard to find such a clear link in other languages.

Many famous stories and poems were written in Persian.

Persian is a major Western Iranian language. It belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. This language is pluricentric, meaning it has several standard versions. People use these versions officially in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. These three varieties are mutually intelligible. This means speakers of one variety can understand the others.

There are three distinct standard varieties of the language. In Iran, the official language is called Iranian Persian. In Afghanistan, the official language is known as Dari. The name Dari means "of the court." It originally referred to the Persian used in the Sasanian Empire. In Tajikistan, the standard variety is called Tajik. Tajik is also the name for Persian varieties spoken in Central Asia.

Writing systems for Persian vary by country. In Iran and Afghanistan, people use the Persian alphabet. This alphabet is a derivative of the Arabic script. In Tajikistan, the writing system is different. They use the Tajik alphabet, which is a derivative of the Cyrillic script. Even with different scripts, the spoken language remains connected. This allows for cultural continuity across different regions.

Persian has a unique and continuous history. It is divided into three main stages: Old, Middle, and New Persian. These stages correspond to major historical eras. Old Persian was used during the Achaemenid Empire from 550 to 330 BCE. Middle Persian was the official language of the Sasanian Empire from 224 to 651 CE. New Persian is the modern version that emerged after the Muslim conquest of Persia.

Scholars note that Persian is a very special case. It is the only Iranian language with established philological links between all three stages. This means New Persian is a direct descendant of Middle and Old Persian. Other Iranian languages, like Kurdish or Balochi, do not show this same direct line.

This continuity makes Persian a rare example of linguistic evolution. It represents one single language moving through three historical states.

Throughout history, Persian was a language of high prestige. It was used as an official language of bureaucracy by many empires. This included the Ottomans in Anatolia and the Mughals in South Asia. Even non-native speakers used it for government work.

The language also influenced many others. It impacted Greek, Armenian, Georgian, and Turkic languages. It even influenced Arabic, though it borrowed much vocabulary from Arabic during the Middle Ages.

Persian has produced some of the world's most famous literature. New Persian literature began to be recorded in the ninth century. The legendary poet Ferdowsi wrote the Shahnameh. Other famous writers include Rumi, Hafez, and Saadi Shirazi.

Famous works include the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám and the Conference of the Birds by Attar of Nishapur. These works remain central to Persian culture and identity.

Today, there are approximately 130 million Persian speakers worldwide. This large population includes many different ethnic groups. These include Persians, Lurs, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Afghan Pashtuns. Some scholars use the term "Persophone" to describe a speaker of the language.
