The city has changed hands between France and Spain many times. In 1344, Peter IV of Aragon annexed the Kingdom of Majorca. This made Perpignan part of the Principality of Catalonia. Later, the Black Death caused the city to lose about half of its population. The city was occupied by the French in 1463. It was later restored to Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1493. During the Thirty Years' War, the French captured the city in 1642. Finally, the Treaty of the Pyrenees formally ceded the area to France 17 years later. 
Today, the city features many historic landmarks and architectural sites. The Hôtel de Ville, or City Hall, dates back to 1318. 

Culture and sport are very important to the people of Perpignan. The city is a stronghold for rugby. The rugby union side, USA Perpignan, has been French Top 14 champions seven times. 

Transportation connects Perpignan to many other major European regions. The A9 motorway links the city with Barcelona and Montpellier. The Gare de Perpignan railway station provides connections to Paris and Toulouse.
