Pernambuco is a large state located on the east coast of Brazil.

The geography of Pernambuco is divided into several distinct environmental zones. The first is the narrow coastal zone, which is very fertile. This area was once covered by the humid Atlantic Forests, known as Mata Atlântica. Today, much of this land is used for large sugarcane plantations. The second zone is the agreste, which is an intermediate region. It has a drier climate and lighter vegetation than the coast. Many trees in the agreste are semi-deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves during the dry season.
The third major zone is the sertão, located in the inland region. The sertão is high, stony, and very dry. This area often faces long periods of drought, known as secas. The vegetation here is mostly caatinga, which is a type of dry, thorny scrub. The climate in the sertão features hot days and cool nights. There are two main seasons: a rainy season from March to June and a dry season for the rest of the year. The Rio São Francisco serves as the main water source for this dry interior.
Between these zones lies the Borborema Plateau, or Planalto da Borborema. The climate here is more mild than in the sertão. Some towns sit more than 1,000 meters above sea level. In cities like Triunfo, temperatures can drop to 10 °C or even 5 °C during the winter.

The history of Pernambuco began with Tupi-Guarani speaking indigenous peoples. They were hunter-gatherers who lived in long houses and grew manioc.
Political control of the region changed several times over the centuries. The Dutch occupied Pernambuco from 1630 until 1654. During this time, Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen served as a ruler.
The name "Pernambuco" has several possible origins from the extinct Tupi language. One theory suggests it comes from para'nã, meaning "great river" or "sea," and buka, meaning "hole." This could describe the Canal de Santa Cruz or a reef opening.
Today, Pernambuco is known for its vibrant culture and modern economy. It is famous for its Brazilian Carnivals, especially in Recife and Olinda.
