The glacier works through a complex cycle of movement and pressure. The weight of the ice slowly pushes the glacier over an inner fjord of Lake Argentino. This movement reaches the coast of the Península de Magallanes. The glacier then bisects the lake into two areas. These areas are called Brazo Rico and the Canal de los Témpanos. Because the ice blocks the outlet, the water level in Brazo Rico can rise significantly. It can rise as much as 30 meters above the main body of Lake Argentino. Eventually, the pressure from this dammed water breaks the ice barrier. This process causes a spectacular rupture that sends water into the main lake and the Santa Cruz River.

Scientists classify these ruptures into three distinct types based on how they happen. The first type is a sudden discharge rupture. In these events, the water escapes very quickly. For example, a sudden event in 2008 reached a peak discharge of 8,000 m³ per second. The second type is a progressive discharge rupture. These events are much slower and involve the formation of a subglacial tunnel. In 2013, a progressive event lasted 85 days to complete the discharge. The third type is a minor burst. These occur when the glacier does not completely block the water. Instead, it just narrows the passage, causing the water to rise slightly and drain slowly.

The history of the glacier involves many different names and international disputes. In 1879, Captain Juan Tomás Rogers of the British Chilean Navy first sighted it. He named it "Francisco Gormaz" after a Chilean Navy official. Later, Rudolph Hauthal named it "Bismarck" to honor the Prussian Chancellor. The area was once disputed between Chile and Argentina. After long research and surveys, Lieutenant Iglesias named it Perito Moreno in 1899. This was an homage to the explorer Francisco Moreno. A 1998 agreement finally set a border line that crosses the origin of the glacier.
