They are all herbivores, meaning they eat only plants like grass and leaves. Most of these animals live in specific parts of the world today. You can find them in Africa, Asia, and Central or South America. They are very important to the ecosystems where they live.

These animals have a unique way of working from the inside out. They are hindgut fermenters, which describes how they digest their food. Instead of using a complex stomach, they use a large part of their gut called a cecum. Inside this cecum, tiny microbes break down the plant cellulose. This process allows them to get energy from the plants they eat. This digestive method is different from even-toed animals like cows. Because this way of eating is not always efficient, these animals tend to be large.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time to understand them. In the 19th century, a zoologist named Richard Owen recognized these families were related. He was the one who gave them the name Perissodactyla.

History shows that this group used to be much larger and more diverse. In the past, many different types of these animals lived across the globe. They were found almost everywhere except for Australia and Antarctica. Today, many species are much smaller in number due to habitat loss.

There are many amazing facts about the size and shape of these animals. The extinct Paraceratherium was one of the largest land mammals ever to live. It may have weighed as much as 20.6 tonnes. On the other end, an early horse called Eohippus was very small. Living perissodactyls have different foot structures to help them move. Horses have only one toe, which helps them run with great speed. Rhinos have three toes, and tapirs have four on their front feet.

You might notice how different their bodies look compared to other animals. Tapirs are the only living members of this group with a trunk. Rhinos have horns made of keratin, which is the same material in hair. Most of these animals are grey or brown in color. However, some animals like zebras have stripes to help them blend in. Their babies are often born precocial, meaning they are ready to move quickly. A young horse can follow its mother just a few hours after birth.

They are divided into three distinct families: Equidae, which includes horses and zebras; Rhinocerotidae, which contains rhinoceroses; and Tapiridae, which includes tapirs.

This group is vital to understanding mammalian evolution and herbivore biology. They play specific roles in their ecosystems as primary consumers of plant matter.

A defining characteristic of perissodactyls is their unique digestive system. They are hindgut fermenters. This means they process plant cellulose in their intestines rather than in specialized stomach chambers. After food leaves the stomach, it enters an enlarged organ called the cecum.

Inside the cecum, microbes begin the fermentation process to break down tough plant fibers. This process continues in the large colon. Because this method of nutrient extraction is relatively inefficient, most perissodactyls are large animals. Larger bodies have a smaller surface-area-to-volume ratio, which helps manage their nutritional requirements. In horses, the small intestine can reach lengths of up to 30 meters.

The physical structure of their limbs is also very specialized. The main axis of the foot passes through the third toe, which is always the largest. Other toes are often reduced or even absent. For example, modern equines possess only a single toe, though it is covered by a hoof. This reduction in digits decreases limb mobility but increases running speed and agility.

In contrast, tapirs are adapted for soft ground and have four toes on their front feet and three on their hind feet. Rhinoceroses typically have three toes on both their front and hind feet.

Perissodactyls also possess unique skull and dental features. They have long upper jaws with an extended gap called a diastema between their front and cheek teeth. This gives them an elongated head shape. Their teeth are highly dependent on their specific diets. For instance, the shape and height of their molars change depending on whether they eat soft leaves or hard grass. Rhinos are notable for having one or two horns made of agglutinated keratin. This is different from even-toed animals, which often have horns with a bony core.

The history of this order shows incredible diversity and massive scale. In the 19th century, the zoologist Richard Owen recognized these different families were related. He was the one who coined the name Perissodactyla.

In the past, the order included many extinct groups like the brontotheres and chalicotheres. The most famous extinct member is the Paraceratherium. This hornless rhinocerotoid lived during the Oligocene. It is considered one of the largest land mammals to ever exist. Some estimates place its weight as high as 20.6 tonnes.

While some members were giants, others were quite small. An early prehistoric horse known as Eohippus had a much smaller stature. Living perissodactyls can reach a body length of up to 5 meters and weigh several tonnes. Most species are grey or brown, though zebras and young tapirs feature stripes.

Their reproductive patterns are also distinct. They have long gestation periods, often between 330 and 500 days. Offspring are born precocial, meaning they are quite independent shortly after birth. A young horse can follow its mother within just a few hours.

Today, the distribution of perissodactyls is much more limited than in the past. During the Eocene and Oligocene, they were found across much of the globe. They were only absent from Australia and Antarctica. Now, they are found in Central and South America, Africa, and parts of Asia. Many species face threats from habitat destruction and poaching. This has resulted in fragmented populations for many rhinoceros species. However, domesticated horses and donkeys have achieved a worldwide distribution due to human interaction.
