Medium zones cover 367 square kilometers. Cold zones cover 70 square kilometers. The páramo zones cover 107 square kilometers. The average temperature is 21 °C. Annual rainfall averages 2,750 mm. The area has a high level of biodiversity. However, the city faces high seismic vulnerability. This is due to geological faults and soil types.

The history of the area began with ancient cultures. The Quimbaya and Pijao people lived here long ago. They were famous for their skills as goldsmiths. In 1540, Marshal Jorge Robledo founded the city of Cartago. This original city was later moved in 1691. In 1863, settlers returned to the ruins of ancient Carthage. They established new huts and blessed them in August. The settlement was called Carthage for six years. In 1869, it was renamed Villa de Pereira.

The city was named after Francisco Pereira Martínez. He was a lawyer and a landowner. He supported the independence of the city. In the 1920s, settlers from Antioquia arrived.
