The geology of Percé Rock tells a story that is hundreds of millions of years old. The limestone is dated to the Devonian period. This period occurred more than 400 million years ago. In 1844, Sir William Edmond Logan mapped these rocks. He is often called the father of Canadian geology. The rock is rich with ancient life preserved in the stone. It contains about 150 different species of fossils. These include marine worms, corals, trilobites, and dalmanites. These fossils provide a record of animal and plant communities from the Devonian period.
Percé Rock is part of the Bonaventure Island and Percé Rock National Park. This park was founded in 1985 and covers about 75 square kilometers. The park is a vital sanctuary for many different types of wildlife. It is especially important for the northern gannet. There are over 110,000 nesting birds in this area. Some sources suggest the population may even reach 121,000 birds. This is the second largest colony of northern gannets in the world. This sandbar is located at Rue du Mont Joli. However, it can be dangerous to go too close because the rock tends to collapse. 
Percé Rock has even inspired famous people through its beauty. The French surrealist poet André Breton visited the Gaspé region in 1944. He was deeply moved by the sight of the rock. He described it as a "marvelous iceberg of moon stone." To him, the rock was a symbol of how nature renews itself. He saw it as a sign of hope and renewal.
