Before becoming a famous voice on population, Ehrlich was a specialized scientist. He was an entomologist, which is a scientist who studies insects. Specifically, he focused on Lepidoptera, the group of insects that includes butterflies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1957. His dissertation focused on the morphology, phylogeny, and classification of butterflies. During his early studies, he conducted insect surveys in the Canadian Arctic and near the Bering Sea. In 1994, he and his wife proposed that the optimal human population size was between 1.5 and 2 billion people.
