The mechanism of Cornu's helicopter relied on a specific way of using engines and rotors. He first developed an unmanned experimental design to test his ideas. This smaller version used a 2 hp Buchet engine for its power. Once he moved to a manned version, he used a larger Antoinette engine. The helicopter featured two rotors that spun in opposite directions. This design was necessary to cancel out torque, which is the force that would spin the craft itself. By spinning the rotors against each other, the machine remained much more stable during flight. 
Cornu's aircraft was unique because of how it achieved lift without external help. Earlier attempts at helicopter flight had been made by other inventors. For example, a French machine called the Breguet-Richet Gyroplane I had managed to lift off. However, that machine required men standing on the ground to hold it in position. Cornu's design was different because it could rise from the ground entirely on its own. This made it a much more significant technical achievement in the field of aeronautics. 
The most famous moment in Cornu's career took place in Normandy, France. On 13 November 1907, he piloted his manned helicopter for a test flight. The results showed that his rotary wing design was truly functional. The aircraft lifted Cornu about 30 cm, which is approximately 1 foot, off the ground. He was able to stay in the air for a duration of 20 seconds. While this seems like a short time, it proved that a manned rotorcraft could fly. 
Despite this success, the early helicopter faced many technical challenges. The machine was scarcely maneuverable, meaning it was very difficult to steer or control. Because of these steering issues, Cornu was only able to complete a few additional flights. He did not continue to develop this specific technical design much further. To support himself and make a living, he turned to manufacturing bicycles. This shows how difficult it was for early inventors to fund their scientific dreams. 
Cornu's personal history is as interesting as his engineering work. He was born in Glos la Ferrière, France, on 15 June 1881. He grew up in a very large household as one of thirteen children. During his youth, he helped his father work in a transport company. This early experience likely helped him understand the mechanics of movement and engines. These early years provided the foundation for his later career as a technical pioneer. 
The life of Paul Cornu ended during a very difficult period of world history. In 1944, he was 62 years old and living in Lisieux, France. During World War II, the Allies conducted a massive bombardment in Normandy. This bombardment accompanied the famous Normandy landings. During this event, Cornu's home was destroyed, and he was killed. Even though his life ended during a conflict, his contributions to aviation remain a vital part of science history.
