Aylwin became the first president after the military rule ended. He served from 1990 to 1994. He worked hard to help poor people. His government built over 100,000 new homes. He also spent more money on health and schools. 
Aylwin also wanted to find the truth. He helped a group look into unfair treatment from the past. He wanted to make things right. He died in 2016 at the age of 97. He is remembered for helping his country grow.

During his presidency, Aylwin focused on helping people in need. He introduced new taxes to raise more money for the government. This money went to important social programs. He helped build over 100,000 new homes for families. 
Aylwin lived a very long and full life. He was married to Leonor Oyarzún Ivanovic and had five children. He even won many special awards from other countries. He received the North-South Prize in 1997. He died in April 2016 at the age of 97.

Aylwin's professional life began with a deep focus on law. He was born in Viña del Mar on November 26, 1918. He enrolled in the Law School at the University of Chile. He graduated with the highest distinction in 1943. 
His political journey started in 1945 when he joined the Falange Nacional. This group later became the Christian Democratic Party of Chile. Aylwin served as its president for seven terms between 1958 and 1989. In 1965, he was elected as a Senator to the National Congress. By 1971, he had become the president of the Senate. During the administration of Salvador Allende, Aylwin led the democratic opposition within Congress. He attempted to find peaceful solutions during a time of intense political crisis.
The most significant era of his career involved opposing the military dictatorship. Following the 1973 coup, the country was led by Augusto Pinochet. Aylwin worked to reunite democratic sectors against this rule. He helped establish the Constitutional Studies Group of 24 to organize opposition. In 1979, he acted as a spokesman against a new constitution. The turning point came during the 1988 national plebiscite. 
When Aylwin became president on March 11, 1990, he faced many limits. 
Aylwin also focused heavily on economic and social reforms to help the poor. He introduced a tax reform in 1990 that increased tax revenues by about 15%. This allowed the government to raise social spending from 9.9% to 11.7% of the GDP. 
Beyond his presidency, Aylwin remained active in promoting justice and ethics. He was a strong supporter of the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation. This commission sought to prosecute those involved in human rights violations during the dictatorship. He also founded the Corporation for Democracy and Justice to fight poverty.
