This is called parasailing. A motor pulls the chute. This helps you go up.

People do this for fun. Some people do it for sport. They try to land in a spot.

It is a great way to see. You can see the water from high up.

Parasailing is a way to soar through the air. A boat or a car pulls you. You are tied to a large canopy. This canopy is like a parachute. It helps you go up high.

People do this for fun on the water. Some people do it as a sport. In Europe, people race in land contests. They try to land in a target area. These contests started in the mid-1980s.

In 1962, Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne made a new parachute. It was for training. It helped people learn to land. Later, Mark McCulloh made a special boat. This boat used a winch to pull the chute. This invention helped the whole industry.

Today, many boats carry more people. They use a metal bar. This lets two or three people fly at once.

It is important to stay safe. Operators must watch the wind. Some places have strict rules for safety. This helps everyone enjoy the view from above.

People feel the wind as they rise high. They are tied to a large canopy. This canopy is a special kind of parachute. A motor vehicle on land or a boat on water pulls the person along. This pulling action makes the canopy lift the rider upward. Some people fly alone in a harness. Others might sit in a special basket called a gondola.

How does the flight work? First, a boat or vehicle pulls the parasail. The canopy catches the wind to move up. This canopy is very stable while being towed. It is different from a standard parachute used in skydiving. A skydiver uses a parachute to steer their direction. A parasailor has very little steering control while going up. When it is time to come down, the canopy slows the fall. This helps the person land safely from any height.

This activity has a very interesting history. In 1962, Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne made an ascending-gliding parachute. He used it to train people for parachuting. It was a cheaper way to practice than using an airplane. In 1963, Jacques-André Istel bought a license to sell these. He called them "parasails." Later, Mark McCulloh changed how boats worked. In 1974, he invented a vessel with a hydraulic winch. This helped pull the canopy up and down. His "WINCHBOAT" became the standard for the whole industry.

Many people have helped make parasailing what it is today. In 1976, Brian Gaskin made the "Waterbird" canopy. It used special fabrics to work safely over water. In 1981, Marcel and Azby Chouteau started a business. They used a boat with a fan-shaped deck. They ran flights on Long Island Sound in Connecticut. Today, many boats use large 30 to 40-foot canopies. These large canopies can lift more people at once. They use an aluminum bar to fly two or three people together.

Safety is a very important part of the sport. In 2013, the ASTM made weather standards for commercial trips. This helps operators know when it is safe to fly. Some places like Florida have very strict rules too. They use the White-Miskell Act to keep people safe. This law requires insurance and checks the weather. People must also watch for bad wind or weak ropes. Following these rules helps everyone enjoy the joy of flying.

Parasailing, also known as parascending, is a recreational activity where individuals soar through the air.

ParasailLong.jpg

Participants are harnessed to a modified parachute canopy. This canopy is designed to ascend when towed behind a motor vehicle on land or a recreational boat on water. While it shares similarities with other sports, it is distinct from paragliding, paraskiing, or parakiting. Those activities usually take place in different environments, such as mountain ranges or open fields. Parasailing provides a unique way to experience the view from high above the ground or sea.

The mechanism of flight relies on the force of the tow. A vehicle or boat pulls the canopy through the air. This movement creates lift, causing the canopy to ascend. Unlike a standard parachute used in skydiving, a parasail is designed for stability during this ascent. A skydiver uses a parachute to steer and control direction. In contrast, a parasailor has minimum or zero steering control while being towed aloft. During the descent mode, the canopy acts to slow the fall of the person from any altitude.

There are different ways to experience a parasailing flight. Some people wear a specially designed body harness with a tow bar. Others may be seated in a customized gondola, which is a basket-like structure. Modern commercial operations often use large canopies, ranging from 30 to 40 feet. These high-lift, low-drag designs allow operators to carry heavier payloads. Many boats now offer double or triple flights. This is possible through an adjustable side-by-side aluminum bar. This bar attaches to the yoke of the chute to hold multiple passenger harnesses at once.

The history of towed flight includes early, credible reports from the 19th century. In the period between 1839 and 1841, a sailor on the USS Constitution mentioned seeing a person towed through the air on a kite. However, the modern era of parasailing began in 1962. Pierre-Marcel Lemoigne developed the first ascending-gliding parachute. He established an Aeronautical Training Center to use this tool for training parachutists. This method was more effective and cheaper than using an airplane for training. In 1963, Jacques-André Istel of the Pioneer Parachute Company bought a license to manufacture these. He gave the 24-gore ascending-gliding parachute the trade name "parasail."

Technological inventions significantly shaped the commercial industry. In 1974, Mark McCulloh invented a self-contained launch and recovery vessel. This boat used a hydraulic winch and a canopy assist mast. This system allowed the vessel to launch and retrieve the canopy and riders from the flight deck. His invention, known as the "WINCHBOAT," became the industry standard. In 1976, Brian Gaskin created the "Waterbird" canopy. This 16-gore design used zero porosity fabrics to ensure safety over water. Most commercial operators eventually moved to this 16-gore canopy arrangement.

Safety and regulation are critical components of the modern industry. In April 2013, the ASTM established the first weather standards for commercial operations. This followed concerns about hazardous conditions and unserviceable gear. In 2014, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) noted that the industry was largely unregulated. They identified risks like weak ropes and operating in bad winds. In Florida, the White-Miskell Act was passed to add strict regulations. This law requires companies to have insurance and restricts flying during inclement weather. These rules help prevent accidents, such as those where riders could not exit harnesses after unplanned landings.

Parasailing also exists as a competitive sport in Europe. In these land-based competitions, the parasail is towed to a specific height behind a vehicle. The driver or the parasailor then releases the tow line. The goal is to land in a specific target area. The first international competitions for this sport began in the mid-1980s. These events have continued annually and have grown in both size and scope. They now attract many participants and spectators. This demonstrates how a recreational activity can evolve into a structured, global sport.
