The history of classifying *Panthera* has changed many times. Lorenz Oken named the genus in 1816, initially grouping all spotted cats together. In 1916, the taxonomist Reginald Innes Pocock revised this classification. He used skull features to group the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. Since the mid-1980s, researchers have used genetic studies of blood samples to refine these groups. This technology has shown that some previously named subspecies do not have enough genetic distinction to remain separate.
