The Tornado is a fast plane.
The Tornado is a fast plane.
Three lands helped build it. These are Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They worked as a team.
Many planes were made. There were 990 planes in all. They fly in many ways. They can fly low to the ground.
Some planes fly to find things. Other planes fly to protect the air. They have been used in many wars.
This plane was first built a long time ago. It first flew in 1974. It is a very special plane.
The Panavia Tornado is a special kind of jet.
Three countries worked together to build it. These are Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They formed a group called Panavia Aircraft GmbH.
The Tornado has a very cool feature. It has variable-sweep wings. This means the wings can move. They can change shape while the plane flies. This helps the plane fly fast or fly well.
Many Tornados were built. There were 990 planes in total. The first one flew in 1974. They began to fly for work in 1979. The Tornado has been used in many wars. It has flown in the Gulf War and the Iraq War. It has also been used in Libya and Syria.
The Panavia Tornado is a special family of combat aircraft.
The plane works using a clever design called variable-sweep wings.
Three nations worked together to create this aircraft.
The history of the Tornado began many years ago.

You might recognize the Tornado from history books.
The Panavia Tornado is a versatile family of twin-engine combat aircraft.
The aircraft is famous for its variable-sweep wing design.
There are three primary variants of the Tornado, each built for a specific mission. The first is the Tornado IDS, which stands for interdictor/strike. This version acts as a fighter-bomber. The second is the Tornado ECR, which is used for electronic combat and reconnaissance.
The history of the Tornado began with several failed or cancelled projects. In 1965, the United Kingdom cancelled the BAC TSR-2 project. In 1967, they also cancelled the purchase of the US General Dynamics F-111K. Britain had previously worked on a project called the AFVG with France.
Building the Tornado required a complex division of labor among the partner nations. The United Kingdom and West Germany each held a 42.5% stake in the workload. Italy held the remaining 15% of the production work.
Testing the aircraft revealed several technical challenges that engineers had to solve. The first flight took place on 14 August 1974, in Manching, Germany. During flight tests, engineers found that airflow disturbances caused issues at supersonic speeds. They had to re-profile the fuselage and engine intakes to stop this. They also discovered safety issues with the engines at high altitudes. When trying to slow down at high altitudes, the engines could suffer from violent vibrations. To prevent this, the engine controls were designed to increase the minimum idle setting. Additionally, engineers had to add a nose-wheel steering system to help the plane stay stable when using thrust reversers during landing.
The Tornado has a significant history of active service in many conflicts. A total of 990 aircraft were built across all variants.
