Pamukkale is a unique natural site located in the Denizli Province of southwestern Turkey. 


The geology of Pamukkale is driven by a specific chemical process. The terraces are composed of travertine. Travertine is a sedimentary rock deposited by mineral-rich water. In this region, there are 17 different hot springs. The water temperatures in these springs range from 35 °C (95 °F) to 100 °C (212 °F). 

Historically, the ancient Greek city of Hierapolis was built directly on top of these travertine formations. The formation is massive in scale. It is approximately 2,700 metres (8,860 ft) long and 600 m (1,970 ft) wide. The structure also reaches a height of 160 m (525 ft). 
The history of the region includes many different cultures and significant events. In the Phrygian period, likely during the first half of the 7th century BC, a temple was built. This temple later became the center of Hierapolis. During the Roman period, the city became part of the Roman province of Asia in 133 BC. However, the city faced destruction in AD 17 when a major earthquake occurred during the rule of Emperor Tiberius. The city also had a large Jewish population. It is estimated that the Jewish congregation reached 50,000 people by 62 BC.
Christianity also played a major role in the development of Hierapolis. The Apostle Paul influenced the founding of a church here while he was at Ephesus. The Apostle Philip spent his final years in the city. It is alleged that a Martyrium was built where Philip was crucified in AD 80. By the 4th century, Christianity had become the dominant religion. This shift is evidenced by the fact that Christians filled Pluto's Gate with stones. In 531, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian raised the bishop of Hierapolis to the rank of metropolitan. During this Byzantine period, the city continued to flourish as a Christian center. Even the Roman baths were eventually converted into a Christian basilica.
Today, the site serves as both a historical museum and a major tourist destination. The local museum houses many artifacts from Hierapolis and nearby towns like Laodiceia and Colossae. Some exhibits are held in the vaulted Hierapolis Bath buildings. Other marble and stone artifacts are displayed in open-air areas, such as the ancient library and gymnasium.
Preserving this delicate environment is a high priority for authorities. Because the travertine is so fragile, UNESCO and local officials must manage it carefully. In 1988, Pamukkale and Hierapolis were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To protect the landscape, authorities regulate the flow of water. They also periodically close certain sections of the terraces. This allows the mineral formations to regenerate naturally. These conservation efforts ensure that the "cotton castle" remains intact for future generations. The site remains a vital link between natural geological wonders and ancient human history.
