Some scientists once thought dromomerycids were part of this family. Now, researchers think they are different. They say dromomerycids lack certain skull features that true palaeomerycids have.

Scientists believe these head parts served different purposes depending on the species. In primitive members like Ampelomeryx, the third appendage was an expansion of the occipital bone. This bone sat close to the powerful muscles that support the skull. Because of these strong muscles, scientists suggest these animals used the appendages for fighting. This likely happened between males during the breeding season. However, later species had different shapes. Their appendages were flatter and oriented to the sides. These reduced shapes suggest they were used for passive display instead of active fighting.

Different genera within the family showed these varied shapes. The genus Triceromeryx had a Y-shaped appendage. Another species, Triceromeryx conquensis, had a T-shaped appendage. In this species, the lateral branches expanded toward the front of the head. The genus Ampelomeryx had a different system. It had two paired appendages that were flat and wide. These formed an eye-shade over the orbits. It also had a spectacular posterior appendage that was about 30 centimeters long. These specific details show how much the family diversified.

Our understanding of these animals changed as new fossils were found. For a long time, the first known member, Palaeomeryx, was thought to be hornless. Scientists believed it was only distantly related to the Giraffidae family. This changed when the paleontologist Miguel Crusafont found remains of Triceromeryx in middle Miocene Spain. This discovery proved that these animals did have head appendages. The family Palaeomerycidae was originally named by Lydekker in 1883. Later, researchers like Hulbert and Whitmore assigned them to the Artiodactyla in 2006.

Modern research also helps us understand how they relate to other animals. Some scientists once thought dromomerycids were a subfamily of Palaeomerycidae. However, recent studies have cast doubt on this idea. Researchers noticed that dromomerycids lack certain sutures on the skull roof. These sutures are lines where bones meet. Giraffomorphs, which include Giraffidae and Palaeomerycidae, use these sutures for their ossicone features. Because dromomerycids lack them, they may be a separate group. The similarities between the two families might just be the result of parallel evolution.
