As water flows, it acts on the banks. On the outside of a bend, the water erodes the land. This means the water wears the bank away. On the inside of the bend, the river leaves behind sand and gravel. This is called deposition.

Over time, these two things make the bend even wider. The neck of land between the bends gets very thin. Eventually, the river cuts through the neck. This happens during a flood or through constant wear. The river takes a new, straighter path.

Rivers change shape through two main actions. On the outside of a bend, the water wears the land away. This is called erosion. On the inside of the bend, the water leaves behind sand and gravel. This is called deposition. This happens because of a secondary flow. The water on the river floor moves toward the inside bank. This flow sweeps loose material into piles called point bars.

Over time, these actions make the river bend much larger. The two banks on either side of the bend get closer. This leaves a very narrow neck of land between them. Eventually, the river cuts through this neck. This might happen during a strong flood. The river then follows a new, straighter path. This new path is called a cutoff.

Once the river moves, the old loop is left behind. Silt builds up at the entrances of the loop. This seals the loop off from the main river channel. Now, it is an oxbow lake. These lakes have no current flowing through them. Because the water is still, silt builds up on the bottom. This can turn the lake into a swamp or a bog.

Oxbow lakes are important homes for many living things. In the Amazon River, giant river otters live in them. In the United States, bald cypress trees grow there. These lakes also help the river by trapping dirt and runoff. People call these lakes different names in different places. In Australia, they are called billabongs. An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of still water. It forms when a wide meander, or bend, in a river is cut off from the main channel. This creates a free-standing pool that no longer has a current flowing through it. The term "oxbow" comes from a U-shaped piece of wood used in a harness for oxen. These animals use such tools to pull heavy ploughs or carts. In different parts of the world, these lakes have unique names. In Australia, people call them billabongs. In South Texas, oxbows left by the Rio Grande are known as resacas.

To understand how these lakes form, we must look at how rivers move. When a river reaches a low-lying plain, it often meanders widely. This movement is driven by two processes: erosion and deposition. Erosion is the wearing away of land, while deposition is the dropping of material like sand or gravel. On the outside of a bend, known as the concave bank, the water performs lateral erosion and undercutting. This wears the bank away. On the inside of the bend, known as the convex bank, deposition occurs. This creates features called point bars.

This happens because of a process called secondary flow. As water moves around a curve, the surface is slightly higher on the outside of the bend. This creates a pressure gradient. The water pressure is greater near the outside bank than the inside. This pressure provides centripetal force to keep the water moving in a curve. However, the layer of water along the river floor does not move as fast. This boundary layer responds to the pressure by flowing across the floor toward the convex bank. This flow sweeps loose silt and sand toward the inside of the bend.

Over time, these continuous actions change the shape of the river. The erosion on the concave bank and deposition on the convex bank make the meander much more pronounced. This causes the two banks to move closer together. Eventually, a very narrow neck of land remains between the two sides of the bend. The river will eventually cut through this neck. This can happen through lateral erosion or during the strong currents of a flood. When the river breaks through, it follows a new, straighter course called a cutoff.

After the river takes its new path, the old loop is abandoned. Silt begins to build up at the entrances of the abandoned meander. This process of siltation eventually seals the loop off from the main river channel. At this point, the loop becomes a true oxbow lake. Because there is no longer a current, the lake bed gradually accumulates more silt. Over many years, this can turn the lake into a swamp or a bog. Eventually, the water may evaporate completely. This entire process can take anywhere from a few years to several decades.

Oxbow lakes are vital wetland ecosystems. They provide specific habitats for many species. In the Amazon River, they are favorable homes for the giant river otter. In the United States, they are the primary habitat for the bald cypress and water tupelo trees. These lakes also help the health of the larger river system. They act as filters by trapping sediments and agricultural runoff. This removes these materials from the main river flow. However, this process can be destructive to the oxbow lake itself. They are also vulnerable to heavy metal contamination from industrial sources.

Humans sometimes create oxbow lakes artificially. This happens when a river channel is straightened to improve navigation or to help with flood alleviation. For example, in the nineteenth century, the upper Rhine in Germany was straightened. Another example is the Oxford Canal in England. Originally, the canal had a very meandering course. Between 1829 and 1834, the northern part was straightened. This left several oxbow-shaped sections isolated from the new course. These man-made changes show how much human activity can alter natural river patterns.
