Ouro Preto is also a major university town. The Federal University of Ouro Preto, or UFOP, has about 10,000 students. These students participate in a unique living tradition. They live in shared houses called repúblicas. There are 66 university-owned repúblicas and 250 private ones. This system is unique in Brazil and shares traits with the University of Coimbra in Portugal. Some freshmen, called "bixos," must go through a period called "batalha." This is a type of hazing before they are accepted into the house. The final choice for new members must be unanimous among senior students.
