The Ottoman Empire was a massive state that lasted for many centuries. It covered large parts of Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. This empire was centered in the land we now call Turkey. For six hundred years, it sat at the center of the world. It helped connect the Middle East with Europe through trade and travel. Because it was so large, it held many different kinds of people.

Managing such a huge area was a very big job. The empire used a system to keep peace among many groups. These groups were called millets. Each millet was a community with its own religious beliefs. Under Islamic law, these groups could manage their own local affairs. This helped different people live together in the same empire. It was a way to handle many different cultures at once.

The Ottoman Empire was a massive transcontinental state. It lasted from the 14th century until the early 20th century. At its height, it spanned Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. The empire was centered in modern-day Turkey. It functioned as a bridge between the Middle East and Europe for six centuries. This position allowed the empire to control major trade routes.

The empire began as a small principality called a beylik. It was founded around 1299 in northwestern Anatolia. A Turkoman tribal leader named Osman I established this state. The name "Ottoman" comes from an anglicization of his name. Osman's followers included Turkish tribal groups and Byzantine renegades. They expanded by conquering towns along the Sakarya River. A key victory occurred at the Battle of Bapheus in 1302. This helped Osman's small kingdom grow into a larger power.

Expansion continued through the 14th and 15th centuries. The Ottomans moved into the Balkans and parts of Anatolia. In 1326, Orhan captured the city of Bursa. This city became the new Ottoman capital. The empire also captured the important port of Thessaloniki in 1387. A major victory in Kosovo in 1389 ended Serbian power in that region. In 1453, Mehmed II conquered Constantinople. This event ended the Byzantine Empire. The city became the new capital of the Ottoman state.

Managing a diverse population required specific systems. The empire ruled over many different religious communities. These communities were organized into groups called millets. Under Islamic law, millets had varying levels of autonomy. This meant they could manage their own internal affairs. This system helped different people live within the same empire.

Challenges began to emerge after the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683. While the economy remained strong for a time, the empire faced decline. By the 18th century, the state fell behind Europe in technology. Imperial authority began to fragment into smaller pieces. Wars with Austria and Russia led to a loss of territory. Rising nationalism in the Balkans also caused new states to emerge. In the 19th century, the empire tried to modernize through Tanzimat reforms.
