Oswald was a powerful king who ruled the Northumbrian kingdoms during the 7th century.
Oswald was born around the year 604 to King Æthelfrith and Queen Acha. His father was a successful ruler who consolidated the kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira. However, Æthelfrith was killed in battle at the River Idle around 616. This defeat by Raedwald of East Anglia forced Oswald and his brothers into exile. They fled to the northern kingdom of Dál Riata in Scotland.
Oswald's path to the throne began with the Battle of Heavenfield near Hexham. In 634, the Welsh ruler Cadwallon ap Cadfan had killed Oswald's brother, Eanfrith. Oswald led a small army to face Cadwallon's much larger forces. Before the fight, Oswald had a wooden cross erected in the ground. He knelt by the cross to pray with his soldiers. Tradition says Oswald had a vision of Saint Columba the night before the battle. This vision promised him victory if he acted manfully. Oswald's army won the battle, and Cadwallon was killed.
Following this victory, Oswald became the most powerful ruler in Britain. He reunited the kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira under his single rule. For eight years, he held a position of supreme authority known as imperium. Some sources, like the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, suggest his reign lasted nine years. He was even referred to as a Bretwalda, a term for a high king.
Oswald was also a key figure in the growth of the Christian faith. He requested a bishop from Dál Riata to help convert his people. The first bishop sent was unsuccessful, but the second, named Aidan, was very effective. Oswald gave Aidan the island of Lindisfarne to serve as his religious center. Because Aidan struggled with the local English language, Oswald acted as his interpreter.
Bede, a historian writing nearly a century later, described Oswald as a saintly king. Unlike many saints, Oswald was honored for how he lived while ruling. He was famous for his generosity toward the poor and strangers. One story tells of Oswald giving his entire Easter dinner to hungry people. Bede reported that Oswald's right hand remained uncorrupted after his death.
