European exploration began in the 16th century. Spanish explorers led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sighted the coast in 1543. In 1579, Sir Francis Drake anchored at South Cove near Coos Bay. Later, the Lewis and Clark Expedition traversed northern Oregon in the early 19th century. They stayed at Fort Clatsop from December 1805 to March 1806.

The first permanent European settlement was Fort Astoria, established in 1811 by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company.

Political control of the region changed several times. The Treaty of 1818 allowed for joint occupation by the United Kingdom and the United States. The Hudson's Bay Company dominated much of the area from its headquarters at Fort Vancouver.

Eventually, the Oregon Treaty of 1846 brought the region under American sovereignty. This led to the creation of the Oregon Territory two years later. Oregon was officially admitted as the 33rd U.S. state on February 14, 1859.
