Before he was king, he led a military trip to the south. This trip reached the city of Seville. He also led an expedition against the Muslims in that area.
Life for the royal family was often difficult. In 909, the children of Alfonso III rebelled against their father. This led to Alfonso being forced to step down. After Alfonso died in 910, Ordoño and his brother Garcia did not get along. Garcia even stopped a bishop from moving money to a shrine. In 914, Garcia died in the city of Zamora without any children. This meant Ordoño became the king of both Galicia and León.

Ordoño II was a powerful king who ruled during a changing time in the Iberian Peninsula. He was born around the year 873. He was the second son of King Alfonso III of Asturias and Queen Jimena. Ordoño served as the king of Galicia starting in 910. In 914, he also became the king of León. His reign was very important for the region. He helped the royal headquarters move to the city of León. This helped the kingdom transition from the old regnum Asturum to the new regnum Legionis.
Ordoño's early life prepared him for leadership. His father sent him to Zaragoza to study in the court of the Banu Qasi. Before he became king in 910, he already led military expeditions. One such trip went deep into the south of the peninsula. It reached as far as the city of Seville. During this time, his forces reached a neighborhood called Regel. Historical texts like the Historia silense describe Regel as a very strong and wealthy area.
Family life was often complicated and difficult for the royal house. In 909, the children of Alfonso III rebelled against their father. This forced Alfonso III to abdicate, which means he had to give up his throne. When Alfonso died in 910, the kingdom was divided among his three sons. The infant Garcia received the kingdom of León. Ordoño received Galicia. The third brother, Fruela, received Asturias. Garcia and Ordoño had a difficult relationship. Garcia even stopped a bishop from moving 500 metcales to a shrine in Santiago de Compostela.
Ordoño became the ruler of León in 914. This happened because his brother Garcia died in the city of Zamora. Garcia had no children to take his place. Once he held both Galicia and León, Ordoño worked to expand his territory. He fought on two different fronts. In the south-west, he attacked Mérida and Évora. He forced the Muslim governor there to pay for his retreat. In the east, he worked with King Sancho I Garcés of Navarre. Together, they fought against the emir of Córdoba, Abd-ar-Rahman III.
Military success and loss defined much of his later reign. In 917, the Christian forces defeated the Moors at San Esteban de Gormaz. The following year, they took Arnedo and Calahorra from the Banu Qasi. However, the emir Abd-ar-Rahman III reacted strongly in 920. He sent an army that defeated the Christians at Valdejunquera. During this conflict, the emir took the bishops of Tui and Salamanca as captives. Ordoño believed this loss happened because certain leaders did not help him. He met the counts Nuño Fernández, Fernando Ansúrez, and Abolmóndar Albo at Tebular. He imprisoned them by the river Carrión.
Ordoño used marriage to build political strength. He married three different women during his life. His first wife was Elvira Menéndez. She was the daughter of Count Hermenegildo Gutiérrez and the mother of his children. His second wife was Aragonta González. He eventually set her aside because she did not please him. His third marriage was to Sancha, the daughter of King Sancho I. This marriage was a political alliance to strengthen ties with the kingdom of Pamplona.
Ordoño II died in June 924. He left behind young children. After his death, his eldest surviving brother, Fruela, became the king. Fruela had already been the king of Asturias. Because Fruela took over, the different parts of their father's lands were reunited. This ended the period of divided kingdoms between the brothers. Ordoño's life was defined by his efforts to control the shifting borders of his era.
