Ophiuchus has many bright stars. One star is very bright and sits near the top. It is called Rasalhague.
This group is very big. It sits near the center of our Milky Way. It is also near many other star groups.
You can find it in the summer sky. It is a wonderful thing to see.

Many bright stars live here. One is named Rasalhague. It is the brightest star in the group. Another star is called Sabik. Some stars in this area are part of a binary system. This means two stars orbit each other like a pair.
Ophiuchus also holds many deep-sky objects. These are things like star clusters and nebulae. A nebula is a giant cloud of gas and dust. One large dark nebula is called Barnard 68. It is very cold. It might one day collapse to make new stars. There is also a galaxy called NGC 6240. It is shaped like a butterfly. It has two supermassive black holes inside it. These black holes will merge in a billion years. Even the far-away space probe Voyager 1 is traveling toward Ophiuchus.
Ophiuchus is a huge constellation in the night sky. Its name comes from Ancient Greek and means "serpent-bearer." 
Many different things happen within this part of space. Some stars are part of a binary system. This means two stars orbit each other like a pair. One star, Rasalhague, is a bright bluish-white giant. Another star, Sabik, is also very bright. Some stars, like RS Ophiuchi, are called recurrent novae. People have looked at these stars for a very long time. An astronomer named Ptolemy listed it in the 2nd century. He was one of the first to name 48 constellations. In 1604, a massive star explosion called a supernova happened here. Johannes Kepler saw it and studied it very closely. Because of him, people call it Kepler's Supernova. This was the last time a supernova was visible to the naked eye in our galaxy. 
Ophiuchus holds many amazing objects with real numbers to track. The galaxy NGC 6240 is 400 million light-years away. It is shaped like a butterfly and has two huge black holes. These black holes are 3,000 light-years apart. The star GJ 1214 is only 42 light-years from Earth. It has a small planet orbiting it. That planet might be made of gas or steam. Even the Voyager 1 probe is traveling toward this constellation.
This constellation connects to many old stories from Earth. Ancient Greeks thought it was the healer Asclepius. He learned how to use healing herbs from a snake. Some people also say it represents a man named Laocoön. In the past, some called it the 13th sign of the zodiac. However, the zodiac is usually a group of 12 signs. Ophiuchus also contains many different types of deep-sky objects. It is home to many globular clusters, which are dense groups of old stars. For example, M10 is a globular cluster located 20,000 light-years from Earth. M12 is another cluster situated about 5 kiloparsecs from our Solar System. The constellation also holds the Ophiuchus Superbubble. This is a massive structure discovered in 2005 using the Green Bank Telescope. It is so large that it extends beyond the plane of our galaxy. Additionally, the Odin satellite detected clouds of molecular oxygen in this constellation in 2007.
The history of Ophiuchus is filled with famous astronomical events. In 1604, a massive explosion called a supernova occurred near Theta Ophiuchi. Johannes Kepler observed this event on October 16, 1604. He studied it so thoroughly that the event is known as Kepler's Supernova. This was a Type Ia supernova and the most recent one visible to the naked eye in the Milky Way. Galileo Galilei also used this event to argue against the idea that the heavens never change. These observations helped change how humans understand the life cycles of stars.
Specific stars in Ophiuchus provide unique data for scientists. Barnard's Star is one of the closest stars to our Solar System. Only the Alpha Centauri system and Proxima Centauri are closer. Astronomers have studied Barnard's Star for planets and even considered it for interstellar travel projects like Project Daedalus. Another star, GJ 1214, is only 42 light-years away. Scientists found a small planet orbiting it that might be made of hydrogen or steam. The planet has a density only 40% that of Earth. This proximity makes it a great target for studying exoplanets.
Deep in this constellation, we find even more extreme objects. The galaxy NGC 6240 is located 400 million light-years away. It is a starburst galaxy, which means it creates stars at a very high rate. This galaxy has a butterfly shape and contains two supermassive black holes. These black holes are 3,000 light-years apart. Astronomers believe these black holes will eventually merge in about one billion years. We have also identified Gaia BH1, which is the nearest stellar black hole orbited by a G-type star. It sits about 1,560 light-years from the Sun.
Ophiuchus also connects to ancient human culture and mythology. Many myths link the figure to the healer Asclepius. He reportedly learned how to use healing herbs by watching a serpent. In medieval Islamic astronomy, the constellation was called Al-Ḥawwa'', meaning "the snake-charmer."
