Many famous people helped shape how opera sounds.
Even though opera is an old tradition, it is still very much alive.
Opera is a grand form of Western theatre where music serves as the fundamental component. In this art form, dramatic roles are performed by singers rather than just spoken by actors. The word "opera" is Italian for "work," referring to the creative labor and the final result produced.

A typical performance takes place in a dedicated opera house. The singers are accompanied by an orchestra or a smaller musical ensemble. Since the early 19th century, a conductor has led these musicians to ensure everything stays in sync.
Opera has several distinct types and historical styles. During the Baroque era, opera seria was the most prestigious and highly stylized form of Italian opera. It often featured long, virtuosic arias and focused on serious themes. In contrast, opera buffa provided a more comedic style. During the 18th century, the intermezzi—short comic pieces performed between the acts of serious operas—became so popular they became separate productions. By the 19th century, new styles emerged, such as the bel canto style, which emphasized beautiful singing. This era also saw the rise of grand opera and the German Romantische Oper.
The history of opera began in Italy at the end of the 16th century. Around 1597, Jacopo Peri wrote Dafne, which is considered the earliest composition understood as opera today. Although Dafne is lost, Peri's Euridice from 1600 is the earliest surviving score.
Many legendary figures shaped the evolution of the art form through different centuries. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a master of the late 18th century, famous for Italian comic operas and German landmarks like The Magic Flute.
Opera has maintained significant cultural impact through various technological shifts. In the 18th century, the star power of singers like the castrato Farinelli helped drive demand. The rise of recording technology allowed singers like Enrico Caruso and Maria Callas to reach massive global audiences.
While Western opera is a specific tradition, it connects to many broader artistic concepts. Other cultures have independent musical theatre traditions that are sometimes called "opera" by analogy, such as Chinese opera. These are distinct forms rather than derivatives of the Italian style. Opera remains a vital intersection of music, literature, and visual design. It continues to evolve, moving from the private courts of Mantua to global digital streaming platforms.
