A polymath is a person who excels in many different fields of study. Khayyam was a master of mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and Persian literature. He was born in Nishapur, Iran, in 1048. Modern scholars use his horoscope to confirm this specific birth date. His life spanned the period when Seljuk Turkish Sultans consolidated power over Persia. This era was also the time of the First Crusade.

Khayyam's education began with religious sciences and Arabic grammar. He studied under Mawlana Qadi Muhammad before moving to advanced studies. He pursued mathematics and cosmology under Khawjah Abu’l-Hasan al-Anbari. Later, he studied under Imam Muwaffaq Nishaburi, a great teacher in the Khorasan region. Khayyam traveled to Bukhara around 1068 to visit the Ark library. By 1070, he moved to Samarkand to write his Treatise on Algebra. He eventually entered the service of Sultan Malik-Shah I in 1074. This position allowed him to lead important scientific projects.

In mathematics, Khayyam revolutionized how we solve complex equations. He provided the first general solution for all third-degree polynomials. These are equations where the highest power of the variable is three. He did not use simple algebra alone to find these answers. Instead, he used geometric algebra by finding the intersection of two conic sections. A conic section is a curve created by slicing a cone. This method was performed by selecting a unit length and following the rule of homogeneity. His approach was a precursor to the analytic geometry later used by René Descartes.

Khayyam also made significant contributions to the study of geometry. He focused heavily on Euclid's parallel axiom in his 1077 work. This book was titled Explanations of the difficulties in the postulates of Euclid. He examined the properties of a specific shape called a quadrilateral. He was the first to consider acute, obtuse, and right angles for the summit angles. This shape is now known as the Khayyam–Saccheri quadrilateral. His work showed that different angle types lead to different geometries. This helped pave the way for non-Euclidean geometries, such as hyperbolic and elliptic geometry.

His work on numbers helped change the definition of what a number is. Khayyam studied the relationship between ratios and numbers. He was dissatisfied with how Euclid defined equal ratios. To fix this, he used continued fractions to express a ratio. This helped him study irrational numbers, which are numbers that cannot be written as simple fractions. By placing irrational quantities on the same scale as regular numbers, he helped move math toward the concept of real numbers. This was a true revolution in the doctrine of number.

As an astronomer, Khayyam achieved incredible precision in his measurements. He was commissioned to set up an observatory in Isfahan. Between 1074 and 1079, he led a team to revise the Persian calendar. They calculated the length of the solar year with amazing accuracy. They found it to be 365.24219858156 days. This measurement is remarkably close to modern values.
