This land covered parts of modern Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. She was born much earlier than we know, perhaps around 890 AD. Olga was of Varangian or Viking origin. She lived in a place called Pskov. She married Prince Igor I of Kiev. Igor was part of the Rurik dynasty. This family helped start the Kievan Rus' empire.

In 945, a group called the Drevlians killed Prince Igor. They did this because of a dispute over tribute. Tribute is money or goods paid to a leader. Olga became the regent for her young son, Sviatoslav. This meant she ruled while he was too small. She was the first woman to rule Kievan Rus'. Olga wanted to punish the Drevlians for her husband's death. She used several different plans to do this.

First, Olga dealt with messengers from the Drevlians. She told them she would honor them the next day. Instead, her people buried them in a trench. Later, she invited more men to a bathhouse. She had the building set on fire. She also held a funeral feast for Igor. While the Drevlians drank, her followers killed 5,000 of them.

Olga also fought a long siege at the city of Iskorosten. The city did not fall for a whole year. To win, Olga asked for many small birds. She had her soldiers attach burning cloth to them. The birds flew back to their nests. This started a huge fire in the city.

Olga of Kiev was a powerful regent of the Kievan Rus' from 945 to 957.

The Kievan Rus' was a loose tribal federation of lands. These lands covered parts of modern-day Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Olga was the first woman to rule this territory. She served as regent for her son, Sviatoslav, who was only three years old when she took power. Her leadership helped centralize the state and establish lasting administrative systems. She is also remembered as a religious figure in the Eastern Orthodox Church. There, she is honored as a saint with the title "Equal to the Apostles."

Olga's early life remains somewhat mysterious to historians. She was likely of Varangian, or Viking, origin. She was born in a place called Pskov. While no exact birth date is recorded, historians estimate she was born between 890 AD and 925 AD. She married Prince Igor I, a member of the Rurik dynasty. Igor was the son of Rurik, the founder of his family's line. Igor's rule was supported by Oleg, a leader who had consolidated power in the region.

Conflict arose between the Kievan Rus' and a neighboring tribe called the Drevlians. The Drevlians had previously paid tribute to Igor's predecessors. However, they stopped paying after the death of Oleg. In 945, Igor traveled to the Drevlian capital, Iskorosten, to demand tribute. After initially receiving payment, Igor returned with only a small escort to ask for more. During this second visit, the Drevlians killed him.

Some historical accounts describe a violent death, though some historians suggest these details might be exaggerated.

Following her husband's death, Olga took steps to avenge him and secure her power. The Drevlians sent messengers to Kiev proposing that Olga marry their leader, Prince Mal. Olga responded by promising to honor the messengers the following day. Instead, she ordered her people to bury the twenty negotiators alive in a trench.

She then targeted another group of Drevlian leaders. She invited them to a bathhouse and set the building on fire. Later, she held a funeral feast for Igor. While the Drevlians were drinking heavily, Olga's followers killed 5,000 of them.

Olga continued her campaign against the Drevlians by besieging the city of Iskorosten. The siege lasted for one full year without success. To break the city, Olga used a clever trick involving birds. She asked the Drevlians for three pigeons and three sparrows from every house.

Her soldiers attached pieces of cloth soaked in sulphur to the birds. When the birds were released, they flew back to their nests. The burning cloth set the entire city on fire. This event allowed Olga to finally subdue the Drevlian people.

After the wars, Olga focused on the long-term governance of the Kievan Rus'. She implemented the first recorded legal reforms in Eastern Europe. She replaced the old system of tribute gathering, known as poliudie, with a more regularized system. Olga established a network of administrative and mercantile centers called pogosti. These posts were located along the Msta and Luga rivers. They served as trading posts, hunting reserves, and boundary markers. This network helped unify the different ethnic groups within the empire. She also managed hunting lodges to provide birds of prey for trade with the Byzantine Empire.

In the 950s, Olga traveled to Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. She went to visit Emperor Constantine VII. Different historical sources provide different details about this journey. The *Book of Ceremonies* focuses on the formal etiquette used to receive her. The *Synopsis of Histories* by John Skylitzes states that she was baptized during this visit. According to the *Primary Chronicle*, she became a Christian and took the name Helena.

This conversion was a significant step in the religious history of the region, even though her grandson Vladimir later made Christianity the official state religion.
